1992 968
#1

I have an opportunity to purchase a uniquic 968 but it has been left outside for 7 years, it is in terrible shape but does have all original equipment it has 63,000 miles and needs the 60,000 mile service at a cost of $3,000 plus other mechanical things. Cosmedically it is a mess it is almost a project car. My problem is I love the car and would appreciate any advise on if it is worth the price of $15,000 firm that the owner is asking? It is a unique car in color does anyone think these car will go up in value? Is it crazy to spend much more then the value states on a car? ANy info or experiences would be great help in my decission. Is this just a money pit!! it is suppose to be one of the 1st to arrive here

Just from your description, that price sounds ludicrouos. I would guess closer to 5K would be reasonable, given the condition as you describe it. The 968 just isn't a collectable car, so I don't see how being a very early example should add much to its value. Just my 2 cents, though.

you can probably buy a showroom condition, mechanically flawless 968 coupe, for that price...the problem of course is finding one for sale, but be patient because these cars do come up for sale and probably for $ 10K-12K you will have a choice of cars that have been very well maintained and in great cosmetic shape .. I'm with Cloud on this - $ 5 k , maybe $ 6 k but no more, for something which is as you describe.

$15K is utterly ridiculous. Anything over $7- $8K is pure emotion...You should only purchase this car if you are planning on a total ground up restoration with no concern for the cost/value ratio...

JMHO, good luck with your decision,

Jay

I agree with Cloud, that price sounds crazy. If it has been neglected for the last 7 years and sitting outside, you are in for a lot more than a 60k service. Just to re-paint it properly assuming it needs it, you are looking at 3-5k minimum. So, right off the bat, you will be 20-25k into the car before any other unknown items are even addressed. 15k is tough to get for a perfect 968 these days much less one in as poor a condition as you are describing. I would hold off for an excellent example at that price point.

$15K = flawless car with everything working, no exceptions!

If it has been sitting outside for 7 years with little to no use, don't even start it, because that timing belt is bound to snap when you do. And no matter how rare the color, it has to look pretty bad after 7 years of direct sunlight?

I purchased a car that sounds very similar a few months ago for $4,800(Rare color, heated sport seats, early car with unique features) the car also had been sitting outside for several years, however it is in very good mechanical shape and mainly just needs cosmetics. You would be paying about $10,000 too much for the car you are looking at.

Patience is a virtue and it can save you money and aggravation. As I have told in the past, I took a buddy who owned a mint 92 with me to look at a 94 cab. He caught the owner in lies right off the bat and said to me something's not right about this car. When I pressed him he said don't buy it. I didn't. Two years later out of the blue I bought his. Luck and timing no doubt but also a bit of patience. I can't tell you how hot I was to buy that car on the way to it. I knew zip about 968's and was lucky to get my buddy to go up with me that day! There will be others.

Thanks so much for all your responses it really helped me decide that this car, although I really love it, it is really over priced especially in this economy. I don't know if the owner will realize this or find a buyer at his price but I guess I better pass on it. I have a buget so buying way over priced and restoring it is out of my budget. This forum is a great resourse for help

It sounds like you made a good decision. I can imagine any 968 that's sat outside for 7 years could easily rack up $20K in repairs (assuming interior must be totally shot, it would need paint, plus all the seals are probably toast - mucho dinero to replace those suckers), and it doesn't sound like a $35K 968 is on your wish list. There are 26 listings on autotrader at the moment - have you followed up on any of those?

$15k is laughable for that car. I will sell you my 93 6-spd coupe for $18k. has 138k miles, BUT for the extra $3k you get a car that has had a ton of work completed, mechanically like new. Shamless plug, I know.
