your experience with 18" wheels
#1

I am considering buying a cab with 18" turbo twist wheels and am in NJ where the roads are iffy at best, lots of random potholes and such....although I just spoke to a friend in San Diego who told me the roads out there aren't much better...

Wondering what the experiences have been with those of you who have 18" wheels, is it as much as a problem as I think it could be or is the one inch difference between 17s and 18s not that big a deal.....

My rims are 18's. 45's up front and 40's in the rear(because of different tire dimensions). Some groove following on uneven roads but not a problem with power steering. Have some real bad roads. Small holes not a problem....big ones suck no matter what tire/spring/shock combo. Just make sure offset is correct. I try to avoid using spacers, too.

PS: I lived in Madison,NJ for 3 years. Jersey roads are better than Mich roads!

I am running 18" turbo twists.

No spacers are required.

Clearance requires lo profile tires.

The ride on these cars is not luxurious to start, and less tire thickness makes it worse.

I run OEM, chromed, 16's during the winter months with Michelin Pilots and the 18's with Dunlop 901's in the summer.

To be honest, I love the look of the 18" turbo twists and they stick much better, but as a DD the 16's piss me off less often when driving to and from work on the downtown streets of Seattle. Freeway and newer streets almost make you forget that you are running on lo pro tires.

Grooves from studded tires and crowns on the road will be more noticeable with wider tires on the 18's...hold on to that wheel on the freeway...it can pull to one side or another very easily.

Bottom line?

IMHO the 18" turbo twists look much better than OEM/16". The tire width and the way the fill up the wheel well look really sweet. Be careful of pot holes and go for the looks, after all isn't that why we all have 968's?

I got it from Dave at 968 engineering.

He only does small runs every once in a while now.

Email him and see when the next run will be.

Interesting point. i experienced that in a friends car once. didn't attribute it to his after market tires but I bet thats what it was.

I agree with you on the bottom line also. I want a comfortable ride but not at the sacrifice of grip and its a matter of weighing the pros and cons when it comes to looks as well.

BTW Your cab looks perfect.

i have 18s on my car - when i had these wheels built, i took great care to keep the weight down (very important) and chose a very strong wheel - i knew about the physics involved, and the issues of components not really up to the job - i did it anyway - but then, my car is a toy, and not a daily driver - i would never have done this on a daily driver

while i love the look, and the superior handling, i don't love the complications - i may yet go back down to a 17, though it would likely be a 9" all the way around - the problem is tires - i can't find a tire wide enough with a low enough profile

not sure what way i will ultimately go on the street car - i will definitely be builing wheels for the race car
