Wrecked Speed Yellow CGT
#1

At the conclusion of the Rocky Mountain Concours this past weekend, at the Broadmoor, a speed yellow Carrera GT, which earlier had been much admired, was ruined on its way to its trailer. This happened just off the concours ground itself. A couple of photos of the carnage are attached, but they don't show the right side of the car, which was completely destroyed. Apparently, the driver, on a wet road (it rained just after the event finished) lost the back end, did a complete 360, jumped a curb, went through a fence, bushes, and finally stopped a short distance from where he hit a tree. Folks I talked to said it was a "kid" driving the car, supposedly the son of the owner. Not sure if that's accurate or not - I find it hard to believe that a "kid" would be allowed to drive a car like this. However, I did see the owner of this car as he drove his GT-1 prototype (one of two) onto the grounds earlier in the day.

A friend of a friend picked up some of the fender bits as souvenirs. The car is currently sitting at Porsche of Colorado Springs awaiting its fate.

I love the sound of that engine revving. I wonder if I could somehow shoe horn it into my car.

This just in...apparently the driver was a 19 year old son of a friend of the owner. Estimated to be travelling 100mph just a couple of blocks outside the exit from the concours grounds. Apparently, alcohol may have been involved. This happened on a sweeping right-hander just before a roundabout. Amazingly, no one was hurt.

Who lets a 19 yr old drive a $400K car? And it wasn't even HIS SON! That kind of temptation coupled with immaturity and stupidity is an accident waiting to happen.

Have heard about Hulk Hogans son? 800hp supra wrapped around a tree. His friend layed up in the hospital with brain damage.

My 19 year old son couldn't care less about exotic, high-performance cars, and is content with his 97 Honda Civic. Sometimes I am disapointed, other times it appears to be a blessing when you read about kids getting busted up in fast cars.

Apparently that professional driver stuff was all just for show. One of the instructors came out and said it was just put on for the hogan show.

I think the report should have said that the driver was the 19-year old son of a FORMER friend of the owner.

given the absurd cost of any parts for the GT, I presume that level of damage would easily render this car to be totaled

on a quasi-related note, flash and I were at an alignment shop in L.A. for my 968, and they were working on

a GT muffler ( they do some limited performance upgrades on exotic cars ..between alignments I suppose. ) - price tag $ 20,000 ! not the entire exhaust system, we're talking just the muffler !! and it looked like a cheap tin barrell, to add insult to injury. too much money burning a hole in some people's pockets I guess. and then they can't even handle the cars they can afford !

i put this one in the "you get what you deserve, you moron" category - anybody who lets such a kid behind the wheel deserves to lose the car - clearly they did not take precautions to prevent it, so...........

this kind of car should have a requirement of a certain skill and sobriety level before it allows the ignition to start - something kind of like a thumbprint access or something

lol - better stop now - i feel a rant coming on

first of all, I agree.

the opposing view of course will be that any old, $7k mustang, any gto, any camaro, etc.. with enough mods to turn them into a 500hp missle ( and there are tons of them out there ) can cause as much damage / injury, so why limit the rule to a carrera gt or bugatti veyron or other exotics ?

not too many easy solutions for all of this ( regretfully.. )

abslutely, and then the same conditions should apply - but, out of the box, some of these cars are so fast, they should require limitation

you have to wait 2 weeks, and go to a class to get a gun here, can't carry it, and get arrested if it is shown in public - but, you can buy a 200mph car, place it in the hands of a 19 year old, who probably can't control his mouth, let alone that car, and then cut him loose on the unsuspecting public

oops - there i go again headed straight for that rant - i think i need a beer
