My guess is that the owner has a ton of cash and this is NBD to them. Sad to think about but true.

Just to add fodder to Flash's rant I am a proponent of driver's license horsepower rating levels, just like airplanes and professional Captain's exams.

Each one requires lessons from professionals and a difficult written and driving exam, and frequent retesting.

Zero tolerance for "distracted" driving...cell phone, make-up, eating..god knows what else.

Off my soapbox.

ooh - an unoccupied soapbox - cool - HOP!

i would love to see graduated licenses - the pilot's license analogy is perfect - you can only fly what you are qualified for - driver's licenses should be the same

lol - it would certainly increase moped sales

i am very much looking forward to jan 1 when cell phone use in a car is illegal in california unless you are hands free - not the perfect solution, but a step in the right direction

lol - when stopped at a light or something, i have been known to bump women putting on their makeup, and to get in front of people that are reading and lock up my brakes - i saw a woman doing both at the same time the other day - she was all over the road, causing people to dodge her and blare their horns - i phoned it in - got lucky - there was a chp 2 exits up and he nailed her

What I heard is that this was indeed the case. Not only does the owner also own the GT-1 he was also showing at the Concours (one of two GT-1 Prototypes made), but has another CGT. Definitely NBD.

Alright, I'll soap-box it for a minute....

I think you're all missing the point here.

I would ABSOLUTELY support the above-mentioned concept of different license classes for different classes of automobile. I think it would be a great idea, and it would keep some of these yahoos from screwing up their cars, and more importantly, the cars of those around them.

HOWEVER,

We already DO have a system in place whereby if you cannot operate a vehicle at a decent competency, you are not to be granted a license. Does this ever happen? I can't imagine that it does, because the people I have seen on the road would indicate that you are required to have precisely ZERO apptitude for driving a vehicle to be granted a license in the state of Kalifornia. I'm not even going to touch what Flash said about the gun thing, suffice it to say that someone from another country, with no idea how to even read our road signs or communicate with the law enforcement officer IF they ever get pulled over, gets a license without any problems at all and can send 3500 pounds of metal careening down the highway at will. I, on the other hand, with military and law-enforcement training, and a background in carrying numerous weapons, on multiple continents, cannot do so in Kalifornia because it would be deemed unsafe... make sense?

SO- while I do support the ideas that are being presented, I ask you this- who would regulate this new system? Who would decide the qualifications for which levels? How would the tests be administered? I know people who got their licenses here without ever having to drive on the freeway!!! If the DMV/government officials can't even take our CURRENT, simple, basic system seriously... what makes you think they could even BEGIN to set something like this up?

Anyway... great ideas, but without someone competent to implement them, we're just going to have to keep reading these articles and laughing at the dumb-asses... as long as the dumb-ass didn't take our cars with him/her!!

it could be fairly easy

there would have to be ignition limiting devices, and then if somebody bypassed it, and drove it anyway, and they got caught, it would be a felony, just like putting a phony or stolen tag or license plate on your car (i know somebody who did 3 months for that on a first offense) - the administration of the breathalizer ignition devices is similar - while not commonly used, they are effective when they are used

further, if they impounded the car, it would be a pretty good deterrant for most

lol - it's either that or let us start carrying guns and shoooting these idiots on sight

and this would be diferent than the current "solution" employed on most L.A. freeways... how ? <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/tongue.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I saw a comedian years ago who had a solution to inept or out of control drivers. He said everyone should be given the legal right to kill up to three drivers of his/her choice. Drivers would be given a card and when you killed someone the local authorities would punch the card indicating how many kills you had used. So when a driver did something stupid, you could just pull up to him/her and show the card with a "kill" left on it and that would straighten up that person in no time. Talk about the ultimate deterrent.

Again, I think we're getting ahead of ourselves...

This is a GREAT way to set it up. Sounds like it would work to me... I like the concept of the 'limiting' device. It would allow people who wanted to buy nicer cars, but didn't have a "Higher HP" license the opportunity to still drive the car, but in a limited fashion.

BUT- HOW are these people going to obtain these licenses? That was my point- it would be easy to regulate through technology and enforcement, but I'm talking about the initial onset. The DMV gives regular licenses to people who have NO business driving on a daily basis. What keeps these same people from being able to skate their way to a High HP License? The bar is already so damn low, and the regular driver's license testing in such a shambles, that I fail to see how the regulatory agency could possibly support additional licenses.

That's all I'm saying. Once the ball got rolling, it would be easy to control. I just don't see how anybody could get an agency to actually agree on the regulations and testing guidelines to even get this thing off the ground...

they would have to attend a race driving or performance driving school and obtain a license from them, just like attending flight school - the upgraded license would cost money, take time, and require instructors to sign off on them

just think what that might do for the racing business too
