working on a firewall brace
#61

A plate for your car would be easy to fabricate since you are using stock brake booster mount the only welding would be adding the lower tabs that bolt through the inner fender. The labor to R&R the brake booster/master/clutch master and install the plate would probably be 4-5 hrs ($90.00 pr hr) so you could do it for a lot lees than the 2K. Let me know if I can help. Here are some more pics when I was fitting (sorry for poor quality photos) mine is not hard it install it just takes some time and patience. The plate in the photo was not the same one shown in the first post but you can see what is involved. Good luck and let me know if i can help.

Thanks; I really appreciate the help. I sure wish I could weld - need to put that on my list of things to learn someday. Anyway, does the fact that my firewall is already cracked complicate things? And it's not just in the early stages - the guy who found the problem says there's an 8" gash in the firewall, enough that it really isn't safe, or at least smart, to drive. Won't that gash have to be welded before the plate is installed? Which means stripping all the stuff off the firewall, which looks like a pretty time-consuming task. I'm not doubting you; I just want to make sure the solution you have in mind would work for my case. Thanks.

Wow an 8" gash is pretty bad in that case I would have it welded and nstall a reinforcement plate. Talk to Eric at Texas Performance Concepts 817-657-6608 he might give you a more reasonable cost to repair the firewall.

Thanks for the recommendation. What town does Eric live in?

Edit; I found it. Hmmm; Arlington/Fort Worth, a four hour drive. I think I'll search around in Austin to see if I can find someone who will do it for a reasonable price. It has to be done right, though, and it really looks like a very big job, so I can't imagine it being cheap, in any case.

timing is pretty good on this - since i will be having some parts made for the second and final batch of supercharger kits, i can get this done too

Flash,

With the new unit you're working on address a case like mine, where I already have a large gash in the firewall, or will I still have to have it welded first?

8" is pretty bad - i'll get in there and look at it tomorrow to see if i think it will hold things in place with a gash that big

Thanks; I'll try to locate my gash; to tell yo the truth, I haven't actually seen it. I just took the guy's estimate of its size on face value. There's so much stuff on and in front of the firewall that's it's hard to see anything, but I'll get in there with a shop light and locate the gash, and estimate its size and shape. I wonder if it's only visible from beneath the car... If I can, I'll try to take a picture as well.
