Wont start when cold
#1

OK I have searched this topic 6 ways to Sunday and have had limited success.

Problem: When cold outside (lower than 40) car is very difficult to start. requires staying on starter and/or pumping throttle. When it finally starts, runs like crap for 30sec - 1min then perfect, with not drivability issues. Can shut off and restart no problem. Let it sit 4-6 hours and problem starts all over. Colder it is harder to start.

I have gleamed thru searches that it may be 1 of 2 sensors, the "blue one" at front of engine on the intake or the "air intake sensor" located?
Anyone have ideas and also the correct part/sensor name and or part number would be helpful.

I have a new battery and replaced the DME with a 993 part number. No check engine lights

do NOT pump the throttle - this will almost certainly cause more cold start problems than it solves

likely it is indeed an air intake sensor

but before you go there, clean the MAF with MAF cleaner and make sure the throttle plate is closed when the engine is off - if your throttle cable is over-tight, it will cause it to be too open, and cold starts will be difficult

Doesn't do any good to pump throttle. Only works with carbureted cars like my '69 Camaro.

You should also clean your Idle control valve. It will help the car idel when cold.

<likely it is indeed an air intake sensor

I haven't delved into this FI enough to know, but on my old, much simpler K-Jet Bosch injection there was simply a "Cold Start Valve" which was, basically, a fifth injector hooked to a temperature sensor, that injected extra fuel into the intake under a certain temperature. If than thing was not working it was basically impossible to get the car started in cold weather.

I'm sure in our 968s, it's simply a sensor that tells the ECU to enrichen the mixture, like it does on my FI motorcycles.

It seems to me that the idle stabilizer is not working.
It gets it power from the dme relais.
Have you tried swapping it?

I had a very similar experience with my car in September. It would only start in sub 60 weather if I opened the throttle (not pump it). The throttle response was terrible at that time too. My problem was resolved by cleaning my over oiled K & N filter and shooting the MAF with a few squirts of MAF cleaner from autozone. Now it starts great in sub 30's at 5500 feet. The throttle response was much improved.
