window switch
#1

my passenger window switch ( the one on that same door ) works ok on the down function but not the up one. however, the driver's side switch for that window will raise it just fine, so it's not a lifter issue, I'm guessing a bad contact in the passenger side switch itself ? i recently had the door panels off to paint the tops so I thought the shop might have screwed up when reconnecting that switch, but i hear there's only one plug that goes into it so if there was a connection problem it would not work at all... thus, must be a up function contact that was dislodged somehow ?

how to fix ? and are those caps easy to pop out so one can check them ?

could be the upstream connector - i have seen this happen - porsche, in their infinite wisdom, designed the harness in a series of sub-harnesses - each of these has a multi-pin connector - these connectors sometimes get loose and/or have a contact get dirty

since you had the door panels off, i suspect that is exactly what happened

of course i would pop the switch panel off first and check that out - 2 screws and it's out

if that doesn't solve it, then start following the wiring upstream - the next connector is under the carpet in the passenger footwell

Yes the caps come off, but there's little springs and ball bearings inside that can shoot everywhere if you are not careful.

If you take the cap off, be very careful and perhaps do it inside a large ziploc bag or something so that you can contain any bits that fall out. Then, clean the contacts and reassemble. Will most likely work again. If not, secure a used window switch off Ebay or from one of the dismantlers. Used ones are cheap. New ones from Sunset and the likes aren't too bad as well.

I might have a spare (might be the mirror switch though). I can check and send it to you if you want...

thanks guys !!

Let me see if anything happens when I take it off, clean it and put it back again, and if not, I'll certainly take you up on the replacement switch offer !

crap, just realized I have the "wood trim" installed around that switch , I wonder if that's going to be a PITA to work around because there may be less space to pry the cap off or other things that hinder the job..

don't try removing the cap with the trim installed - remove the plate from the door panel - remove the switch from the plate - then work with it alone

Dan,
Got your address.
I will get it in the mail in the morning. No charge.

In the mean time, try "exercising" the switch by rocking it continuously. The contacts get dirty from lack of use.

Hi Guys, My first post. I am from Australia and have a 968 CS M030 M220.

I can agree that the switch will most probably have burnt its contacts and be not working, a new switch should restore its activity. This happened on my old 944 S2.

well, whaddayaknow.. after tapping the up function switch a few dozen times ,hard and fast, it's working again ! it actually started to work after the first dozen or so taps, but then went back to not responding when pressed in a normal mode. however, after the second round of exercising it now seems to have come out of its comatose status..at least for the time being. so whehther dirty contacts or partially burned ones, it cleared up enough to work ok, but I'm skeptical this will last long, since there's obviously a problem so I'll replace it with a new switch anyway. in the meantime though, all is right with the world again. gotta love this forum !!!

The contacts in the switch get oxidized from lack of use. The constant movement clears up some of the oxidation.
If you exercise it regularly, it should work fine.

I will be going to the post office at lunch to send you another switch.

Neither my wife, nor my son ride along in the 968 often enough to play with that switch, so I guess I'll just have to start picking up hitchhikers or something Or, just make a mental note to give the switch a workout once a month or so..
