i learned something new today - the rear window can be repaired without replacing the entire top



before we get into the obvious issues of faded canvas, vs non faded canvas, aged canvas, or any of that, let's just deal with the budget repair of replacing only the plastic window



until today i thought you had to remove the entire top and refit it to do this



NOT SO!



i was speaking to notthd on the phone today, who has done this, and he explained to me something about the construction of the top that i did not know - i've never had mine apart, so i had no reason to look into this - the rear canvas section is not sewn to the top section - it is screwed down - basically the top section lays over the rear section, and hardware screws them down to the rail - very cool actually



so, it turns out, that if you are handy, you can remove the rear section yourself, take it to your local upholstery shop, have a new plastic window sewn in for a couple hundred bucks, and reassemble



this is especially good news for me, because now i can buy an extra rear section and have a zip out rear window installed without jeopardizing the entire top

Oh, how I long for a zip out rear window like I had on my Miata. I don't think new Miatas come with that feature any longer either. Great for having air going through the cockpit without completely dropping the top. Good going, flash!

upholstery shop - this is NOT a DIY job unless you have an upholstery sewing machine - a home machine will not do it

when you get the new window installed, place a towel down over the window before dripping the top, and go gradually, insuring that there are no creases in the window as it goes down



my window is original and still looks new for this very reason
