Window Rail Adjuster Failure
#1

The passenger-side window/rail of my '94 cab was moving about 3/4" when I grasped the top and pushed/pulled, and I could hear something loose and moving inside the door at the base. I removed the door panel and the plastic sheet covering, and discovered that the rail adjuster nut had broken off the rail bracket (see below: Porsche part number 941 531 524 10). As can be seen in the photo, the nut is fastened to the bracket with tiny welds and it seems that this part would be ripe for failure considering the dynamic load when the door is opened and closed and the window is in contact with the roof seals. Someone had created a band aid fix by squeezing the speaker wiring harness in between the bracket and the door shell...lame-o! As can be seen in the photo of my bracket, this window rail has been moving around for quite some time and the threads on the adjustment bolt had cut a slight groove in the bracket.

Thought I would post this as a likely failure point that other cab owners might want to check out. By the way, this is also a great opportunity to see the window rail adjustment points and learn how to use them. Tomorrow I will get the bracket/nut welded GOOD, and re-assemble/adjust (new bracket from Porsche via Pelican was $22...so it is worth fixing the bracket if you have access to the welder). Any tips on window adjustment appreciated, and any other maintenance to do while the panel is off (lube what?).
