[Silver BLT]

Anybody with recommendations on an 8" subwoofer? I prefer a tight bass to a wthump, wthump boomy bass. What are you all running and are you happy with your install? Anyone install in a location other than the RR fender well?

I'm leaning towards the 8" Image Dynamics sub with a clean 300 Watt amp. Comments are always welcome, as are opinions.

I have the 8" Powered Bazooka, same one I had in my 944 (it also had the 10-speaker option like the 968's). I'm not a big bass nut, nor am I going for true high-end audio in the P-cars, but found it's just right for adding that bottom end so lacking from the factory set-up.



They go on sale very cheap at Circuit City stores from time to time, strap somewhere in the hatch area, and was the perfect "no muss, no fuss" upgrade for me.



I also am running a Blau Toronto CD head unit.

If you truely want a nice setup, goto http://www.edesignaudio.com . They build some great gear. They also make some very small enclosures, that have one that is .25 cu. ft. which should fit in the side of the trunk, give em a call for dimensions.



Those bazooka drivers are weak, for the same price you can build a better box that will last you longer and have a lot cleaner bass, like the bose the bazooka 'sounds' good but what you are hearing is controlled distortion

I've got an 8" Kicker in right cubby with a 200W dedicated amp. Works very well. Of course you will need to fly Flash up there to tune it once it is installed <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Seriously Dan , this is not a car that goes Boom. Very full sound. The Red Hot Chilli Peppers is about as Wu Tang as it gets on my Blaupunkt. !

mech - the bazooka drivers aren't weak, in fact, they can handle quite a bit, and the tubes are very well tuned - they do however require that you tune the crossover and gain - if you run the crossover too high, they get very muddy very quickly - if you run the gain too low, or the pregain too high, you get distortion

I have to agree with Flash here. The bazooka, properly adjusted (most folks try to create too much bass in system) was a perfect fill-in for the 968 system in my car.



Certainly not a compromise in my experience. I just followed the same direction as the home speaker set-up (smaller KEF's with nice powered sub, tuned so that you had a sense of the HVAC system running in the concert hall). Simple, quick install, tunable depending on placement... really not a bad option on these cars.

The bazooka is good, but there is better stuff out there, I acutually started out with a bazooka now Im running the elemental 9kv2 with a JL amp, the Image Dynamics makes some awesome subs too

you're not the first person i've heard that feels that way about the bazooka, but so far i have found that is always because they didn't really understand harmonics, and how sub frequencies work and what is needed in a car to make it work right - they were convinced they needed a big wooden box with huge drivers and large amps to get the sub they wanted to hear - in reality, it was just a combination of correcting the crossover, including using a parametric eq to fix the pile up, adjusting pre and post gain and using the right amp for the driver in the bazooka - placement is very important too



now i'm not saying there's anything wrong with the other boxes, or that this is the only way to go - all i am saying, as an audio engineer, and speaking strictly from a design standpoint, is that the bazooka is a very well engineered box, with one of the most accurate curves out there - very compact too - i'm using a self powered 200W 6" - quite impressed with it



like anything though, it comes down to the user's ability to control the device - it can quickly sound like crap if not adjusted properly and integrated into the system correctly

I had an 8" square kicker removed from it's enclosure and a local shop built a custom enclosure that fit just perfect in the ledge behind the passenger seat in my Cabrio. It sounded AWESOME. Had a 320 Amp driving it along with some Polk Audio seperates that he installed in the doors (You can't tell they are there.)



I say had.... While at the shop, someone cut through my top to steal it. Insurance is paying for it, but the guy who built my box is gone. Hope I can reconstruct something that sounds as good.



The old box had the speaker fireing down with a 2" clearance for air along the bottom. It took up about 1/3 of the back shelf.

I have never had the boot cover. I have a brand new top now, so I would like to find a boot cover too.

i agree that this car really needs a subwoofer. this may amuse you...



i found an old 15" punch subwoofer in my attic. then i built a box 24"x20"x7" and put it all in the trunk of my 92 cabrio. it was all free, so i figured why not? i was amazed how good it sounded! and i am also amazed that nothing in the car rattles. the original owner had a kenwood 8" tube back there. it was overwhelmingly boomy and made parts in the trunk rattle. (i think it just wasn't a good fit accoustically.) the punch is hooked up to a rockford fosgate 150 watt amp. i'm not planning on this as a long term solution because it takes up half the trunk, but it does sound very good for now.



i've still got the kenwood powered tube sub and some kenwood 4x6 speakers (brand new). if anyone wants them, let me know. if you pay for shipping, i'll send them out. they're just sitting in my garage now not worth anything to me.



if anyone comes up with a good clean design for a sub encloser that fits in the rear cubbys in the trunk area, i'd be interested.



one question since we're talking trunks... i've got some kind of cylinder in my right rear cubby. looks like rubber. about 4-6" diameter and 12-16" long. it's suspended in the air on both ends by fittings that are made for flexibility. is this the fuel pump??? (forgive my naivite, i'm new here!)

WOW, you have more subwoofer in your car than I have in my house!

If the EQ is turned up on the amp it will soundy boomy (sp?). My little 2 Ohm DVC 8" Image Dynamics sub being pusthed by a Hifonics 400 Watt amp is more than enough for the acoustics in the car. (I LOVE IT) I can only imagine yours!!!

If that "rubber" thing is your fuel pump it's big enough for my 7.3 Diesel <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/ohmy.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> Any way to post a pic. so we can see it? Pic = 1,000 words.

It is a dead weight designed to account for changes in the NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) characteristics of the cabriolet chassis. The coupe does not have one. Don't drop it on your foot!
