CAB SUBWOOFER
#1

ok - so, i've made the decision and am moving forward - i wanted to move the bazooka 200W self powered sub from its current position of immediately behind the passenger seat, wehre it functioned quite well, but now that i have removed my storage boxes, is functionally less than what i want

i really want to have the sub and the amp out of site, and not sacrifice any cabin space or main trunk space (gotta be able to get 2 sets of clubs in the trunk, and leave room for wine up front) - i also want to retain the ability to put the spare back in its hole for extended road trips

this leaves me the rear cubbys - i looked closely at the KLA units, and while i am sure they sound great in a hardtop, and likely would in a cab as well, they don't leave me room to mount the amp there too - that is a huge problem for me - i was very dissapointed - the units looked nice, and i realy didn't want to get into another project

moving on

i did some testing, and have found that the crossover point will have to be no higher than 80hz - anything above that does not make it out of the trunk and into the passenger compartment - this coincidentally was supported by the same findings by KLA with their unit

further, the drivers will have to face upwards, or the body panels will resonate too much

this limits the driver to an 8"

after running the 200W 6" in the trunk for a test, i found that a single 8" is not likely to push enough to give me the low end reinforcement i want at road speed - it wouldn't be bad sitting still, but i don't think it will be enough to overcome the road noise with the top down

so, it looks like i will have to forego the idea of putting the battery in the trunk, so as to be able to fit a box on each side - i'm going to build one and try it on the driver side first, in hopes that i can still move the battery, but i'm not holding out much hope

i'll post pics of the process as i go along

Well good luck with that!

But I thought the lower brace was the next on the project list, you even a a couple of takers.... <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/sad.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

well, it is, sort of

design is done - materials chosen - but, that requires the welder - just waiting on the guy that i want to use to get clear, so he can get on that project

in the meantime, this one i can do myself

very interested to hear what you come up with, flash.

i, too, am interested in the kla enclosure, but have a hard time forking out the cash for some other guy to build a plywood box.

also very concerned about what one 8" sub is capable of from the back corner of my trunk. was thinking of doing two and possibly hiding the amp with the spare tire or just leaving it in the trunk. not too big of a mess.

i'm curious how the kla is attached to the trunk. does it just sit there? any reason that a decent carpenter couldn't just build a box for the cubbys?

actually, i was all set to buy theirs - i didn't think the price was bad at all, and was happy to pay it - i know how much time it is going to take to cut the wood, route the endges, join the pieces, seal them up, and then coat the outside - and that's without any of the modeling time - their price seemed very good to me - i just need the amp to live back there too

scott said it just sits there - i had a hard time envisioning that not rattling, but they make good stuff, so i trust him on that one

anyway, i pretty sure one won't do it, but i'm gonna give it a try anyway - the amp will sit right alongside it in the cubby - the trick is figuring out the shape that will allow it to slip down there past the bodywork and still give enough volume - anyway - film at 11 - i should have something to show by the end of the weekend, though the drivers won't be here yet, so i can't test it until next week

I have the kla cubby sub in my coupe and it doesn't rattle. The best way I can describe it is that it is somewhat wedged into the cubby. It is a tight fit. I hope I don't ever need to pull it out because I don't think it will come out as easy as it went in.

cool - i never suspected for a minute that it wasn't what scott said it was, i just had a hard time imagining it staying put - glad to hear it does

any way you took a shot of it out of the car? i'd love to see the direction they took - while mine wil ahve to be different, it might help to see how somebody else approached it

Unfortunately I didn't take any pictures before the install. I picked up the sub at their warehouse and installed it their the parking lot. Just couldn't wait!!!

I have two Boston 8s in a sealed tuned box running 80hz and below taking up room in my trunk. Not the ideal setup space-wise but pretty nice sound-wise (I'm not recommending my setup just sharing my experience with it). They are bridged and the amp is running ~200(+/-50)watts at 4ohms (each sub is 8 ohms). This setup can actually provide a bit more bang than I need and I'm a fan of loud, especially for highway noise. They deliver a nice fast tight bass that is definitely not muddy but not quite as deep as my home systems. The important parts for me are this setup can be very loud and with minimal distortion.

Given this, I agree one 8 might fall short but if it has a nice sized driver and enough wattage it should do the job, assuming the rest of the system isn't built to turn one deaf. In fact, one driver might be better in the sense that one won't need to worry about resonance cancellation.

The only other thought I have is the amp over heating tucked away in the cubby, especially if not mounted horizontally. Not only can over-heating add noise but I had one mounted vertically and it died prematurely after a couple years. May have just been a coincidence but considering this is the only vertically mounted amp I have had and the only one I have killed, I will be letting the baffles do their job by keeping my amps mounted horizontally from now on.

being an audio engineer, i'm obviously a bit nuts about my sound system

currently i am driving the 6" bazooka at 200 W, and it is nowhere near enough when it goes in the trunk - sitting still, it's "ok", but once you get rolling, especially with the top down, it just disappears

i'm looking for full sub 80 hz support at 110db in the cockpit - i just don't think a single is going to do it, but i am going to try anyway

cardboard mockup to be done on friday - we'll see what it looks like then

the cubby is my only option - gott keep room for the golf clubs, luggage, and the ability to drop the seats for pass through of large items

i am told this amp can mount any direction, and it does not affect cooling - older amps were very directional, but for the last few years, this appears to have changed

my plan is to drive at 2 ohms, and use matting to handle body resonance - cancellation shouldn't be a problem in that space with that size box, but we'll see

saw a cab with 8" cut out on top of cubby.

do not want to cut cubby my self might sacrafice trunk 4 sound space is too small anyways. As i do not play golf no biggie.

eric had a pair of 10s in his until last weekend

the storage boxes aren't sealed, so a free air woofer is needed, unless you seal it up - i deleted my boxes, so i can't go there - thought about though for quite a while - one of the things that stopped me was them being visable - didn't want that - also, they woofers were going to be a problem with the seat backs down (not that it was going to happen often)

complicated and full of compromise

flash, did you put seats in place of your cubbies behind the seats? if not there's no reason you can't fit two 10" speakers there and still be able to pull the seatbacks down to pass through to the trunk. once those cubbies are out of there, it's not to hard to build sealed boxes to fit in that spot and you don't have to worry about using small subwoofers or the sound not passing through the trunk to the cabin. i can't be more happy with what i have now and you could make something similar that meets your needs so long as you don't need that area.

ok - finally made a decision

woohoo!!! i figured out where to put my amplifier, out of the way, and without giving up any space - i'll post pics on this one when it is in

this means i can run the KLA sub - i just ordered it for the driver side - we'll see if it's enough for me - if not, i'll get one for the other side too (that would mean i couldn't put my battery there though)

should be here by friday - one less project

Flash-

Been trying to reach you. Not sure what the problem is but phone still rings busy and now email coming back to me.

Anyway, box is on the way and sorry but I don't recall a friday deadline in our conversation....just that you decided on 3-day. Box left out just after I made the label/sent you the tracking number so it would've been too late to change it to 2-day without jumping thru a cab-load of hoops.

odd - should definitely have gone to voicemail - i have 3 lines that roll to each other

not sure what's up with the email either - maybe i goofed and set a filter by mistake? - i'll send you an email, and you can hit "reply" and see if that works

yeah, i said 3 day, because it was monday, you said a day to get he driver, and i figured 3 days to ship made it friday - that way i can play with it over the weekend

anyway - no worries

update:

KLA box arrived - very nice unit - clean construction, nice hardware - in a hardtop, this would be a great unit - driven with a single 200W RMS amp, bridged mono, this has nice tight bottom end - no resonance - the small volume (.23 cu ft) helps that a lot - this would be a very nice unit in a hardtop for sure - i highly recommend it as a no brainer sub unit

now the bad news:

scott says this fits snugly in a hardtop, and i believe him, but there must be some difference between the cab and the hardtop cubbies, because the driver side unit flops around in there quite a bit in my car - resting in there, it rocks between the drain tube and the rear tab - i bent the rear tab down and out of the way, but it still wasn't much better - i would have to build up the cuby at the bottom, and jam some stuff on the outside to get it to sit in there snugly and not make any noise - ron is due here soon, and i'll test fit it in his car to see what the difference is, and if there is anything simple i can do about it

also, as i feared, a single 8" is nowhere near enough air movement to generate the punch i want (and no, i don't listen to rap) - i don't think 2 of them in these boxes will do it either - i think it is going to take 2 8" woofers, in larger boxes (likely around .35 cu ft) with a 200W RMS amp EACH to do the job

so much for the battery in the trunk

NUTS!!! back to square one - now i am going to have to build a custom unit for each side - this is NOT what i wanted to do

thanks for posting.

my fears, too.

how about putting one large sub in the spare tire compartment? could probably fit a 10 or 12 inch, right? plenty of space in there. might also be room for the amps, too?

there is plenty of room in there for sure - i just don't want to give up the option of sticking the spare back in there for some of the road trips - i plan to drive the car in a "lap around america" - some of those areas don't have cell service
