WHEN ENOUGH IS TOO MUCH
#1

ok - so you guys wanted a separate section for suspension mods - i thought i would kick it off with my latest foray into that

after many springs sets, i was at 300 up front and 500 rear - i took it out on the track, and even with my huge custom swaybars, konis yellows up front, and dual adjustable carreras in the rear, i thought it still needed more spring

so, i stuck in 400 up front and 600 in the rear - i also changed out to dual adjustable konis up front, and stuck in the kla monoball strut tower bushings - after a couple of misstep settings (and unfortunately i let somebody else drive it like that) i finally got the settings right, and the car settled down - cornered like it was on rails - GREAT!

oops - wait a minute - now every bump in the road is killing me

a few tries at new settings, and no luck

ok - back to the 300/500 setup - nuts - still jarring - what the heck?

i pulled out the kla monoballs and put the OEM bearings back in - BINGO!!! smooth and solid

the problem is that i had NO rubber bushings anywhere in the front suspension - everything was monoball or delrin - the car needs some rubber somewhere to be civilized

so, the moral of the story is "too much of a good thing can spill your coffee"

i have to remember that this is the street car - now i get to start looking for a track tub

yeah - it was pretty bad - would have been fine for a race car - amazing setup really - just not for this street car

now it is amazingly civilized - surprisingly similar running down the road to the way the M3 feels - still handles better than the M3, and a lot easier to toss around, but just running down the road, very similar

So Flash, are you saying you finally found the ultimate street setup for a 968 cab? <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Do you use different size wheels on the street/track? I'm just curious.

It's amusing to think that my car is running on original bushings, shocks, etc. and I have become used to the "quality" of the ride. Not just used to, but I've learned the character very well. It's kinda sad to think that once the 17s, konis and 250#ers go in I will have to learn the car all over again. But hopefully it won't be too different or dramatic. I don't intend to change any bushings to solid or delrin.

I have rose jointed mounts/solid metal to metal bushing/monballs everywhere with the exception of the arbs which are polybush, and the spring plate to torsion tube which is the elephant racing polybronze type. (also Bilstein Escort suspension)

The ride from the rear of the car you can cope with, but the front is something else - it is driveable on the road if i use motorways etc, but as soon as the car goes on the local 'A' roads it becomes quite a challenging car to drive. More than half an hour on these types of road and it starts to become too much.

I've always thought that the strut top mounts had the greatest impact on the front end in terms of ride quality. That large chunk of rubber in the originals certainly helped with this. I would have liked some of the Dynatech top mounts but ended up with Lindsey Racing ones. The Dynatech ones offered some compliance with the polybush material.

Bob - have you thought about coming up with this type as a product. (possibly without camber adjustment since for most it is not used and also alters toe)

ren - yes - i think i am done - i was pretty happy with the spring rates before i did the struts, but just wanted a bit more roll resistance on the track - unfortunately the koni yellows that so many use cannot accommodate that without making the ride too harsh and skittish - while i would still like more spring rate on the track, i have to keep in mind that this is the street car, and i will just have to remember that trying to use a street car on the track is never a good idea - i will have to get a dedicated track car to really be happy - it was always the plan - now it is just getting closer to reality

fr - i have not been changing wheels, and probably won't, as this car will not be seeing a lot more track time - i will be moving on to a race car and that one will indeed have smaller diameter wheels

frog - exactly - on the open highway it was fine, but as soon as i got in town, and hit rougher roads with the lower frequency bump, it was horrible - it did not take long for me to be bothered by the noises and such - i had gone to great lengths to quiet the car down, and this just went completely in the opposite direction

now, all is right with the world again

smokie - funny stuff - you know me too well - this time though, i think i've gone as far as i can - time to move on

Flash,

Those spring rates are w/o t-bars right? I have a 400/500 set-up that I thought would be a good baseline, am I way off? I know there are a thousand other variables, but without t-bars should there be a 100 lb difference or 200? My car has terrible understeer on turn in.

yes - no torsion bars

what struts and shocks are you running? that makes a BIG difference

one thing for sure - 400 is WAY too stiff of a spring for koni sport yellow struts (the ones that many people run) if you plan to run on the street - been there done that - what a mess

the V8 and its extra 100 lbs up front reduces the effective rate from to 94% to 88%, so a 350 is about the max for those struts and streetability

if you are running something different, it might be different

p.s. - i happen to have a set of 10" 350s here in my "collection" - also now have a set of 8" 600s, if it turns out you just want to stiffen the rear

I am running Konis, I will back it down to 350 on my next DE to see what happens. Changing springs is not a big deal for me, my shop will exchange them for labour only. Got beat by a 350Z, a fellow hybrid, and one of those four wheel drive VW Gulfs..cant let that happen!

Good thread here and funny just how polarised suspension setups can get. I pretty much have Racers Edge or Elephant Race solids all round and lowered plenty riding on stiff RSpec Toyo 18's and while it's not a limo, it's fine around all but minefields. With 616 f and 708 r (effective with T-bars) I have no real trouble around town. On the smooth stuff or track it rules. In fact I'm considering going up in rates perhaps.

I wish one of you guys would try some KW's or someones car that has them.

KWs are nice but I'm beginning to feel the V3 are too soft and am interested in the ClubSport version that has been on the KW website for a few months but with no details. Not a problem for you Patrick since you went with a race version.

when i was much younger, i drove a car with a rock hard suspension on the street - now that i am older, i am looking for something a lot smoother- still not looking for a mercedes ride, but definitely not a race car ride either

the jouncing and jarring wasn't severe, and it only happened on bumps and potholes and such - unfortunately, we have entirely too many of those around here - it was annoying like a squeak would be - on this car, it just had to go - i liked the performance, but did not like the ride degradation

however, i will be doing solids everywhere on the race car

as for trying KWs, i would have considered it but for the fact that they don't do hydraulic units - i DO NOT want gas on the street car
