Wheels
#1

When I got my 968 over 2 years ago it came with 19" chrome Porsche wheels which I took off as soon as I got home. I am finally trying to sell the wheels and a potential buyer wants to know if they would fit his 993 narrow body. I am pretty sure that the wheels measure 9x19 and 11x19. The previous owner of my car had bought the wheels from a guy who had them on his 996. I am not sure of the offsets. I would think that they would fit since they were fine on the 968 but I just wanted to make sure. Any help would be appreciated.

They should work fine on a 993. 993's and 968's use virtually the same offset front and rear, with the exception that the 993 typically has narrower front wheels, but sitting equally flush to the outer fender as a 968. 996 wheels are also interchangeable as in the Sport Classic IIs I have on. For a definative answer, the offsets you must find.

I doubt that 11" wheels will fit on the back of a 993 narrow body.

Why anyone would want a narrow body vs the lovely 993 wide body does not make sense to me.

Wow, those are some BIG wheels. Do you have any pictures of those on your 968?

Thanks for the replies. I'm at school and the wheels are at my parents house. I asked my parents to take them someplace to find out the offset but I may have to go home this weekend and do that myself. I'm pretty sure I took pictures of the car with those wheels on when I first brought it home but I don't think I have them any more. I may put two of them on my car real quick when I go home to take some more pictures.

$15-20K in your pocket is one good reason...The "narrow body" 993 cars still have VERY pronounced hips, in fact looking more like an older 930 turbo with its fender flares. Yes, the C2S, C4S and 993TT cars were super wide and very pretty, but in my opinion, I don't think that a C2S is worth the big chunk of change more than a "standard" 993 Carrera.

The market value differences are ludicrous. You can find a very nice, clean, less than 50K mile 993 Carrera "narrow" body for mid to high $30Ks, $40K tops. If you want a comparable in condition and mileage C2S or C4S, you are looking at high $40Ks to mid $50Ks for the C4S.

You can put a hell of a lot of mods [suspension/PSS9, chip, exhaust, new wheels/Tires, Big Red Brakes] and still have money left over if you go with the "narrow" body.

Another point, and this is just my opinion, the skirts/side molding on the widebodies kind of spoil the more classic 911 lines on the narrow body cars as well...

If they are Porsche wheels the offset should be embossed on the inside of the wheel.

Vento, you are right I was being too harsh towards the narrow bodies. Personally I do not like the look of the narrow body but many people do.

Bruce I know it is all a matter of opinion as far as looks, I just didn't know if you 968 folk were as aware of the price differences between the widebodies and narrow bodies ...especially with the C2S, all you get are the hips, front bumper, and split rear grill [which is really nice] for a huge price premium...

The C4S at least has the Turbo running gear, suspension, and big red brakes, so it's not as shocking $ versus value...

11" rears have been run on 968's before w/ lowered suspensions even...both 968's and 993 narrow bodies used 9" ET55 offsets as stock. It will be close, but as long as the rubber is 295 or less, there's a good chance it'll work.

Are they spinners? I can't put 20" spinners on my car so maybe the 19" would fit...

Just effing with you guys, I would love to see pics of the 19's on there and 11" wide, that's a big wheel. Is it a Techart wheel or another aftermarket brand? What was the reason for taking them off?

The main reasons I took the wheels off was because I would rather have the money to put back into the car and I had the 17" twists which I had taken off of my s2. My Dad told me what the wheels were called a few days ago but I can't remember right now. The guy who had them on his 996 said that he paid $6800 for them

no way would i ever even think of putting a 19" wheel on a 968 - 18s are a real push - glad you pulled them off - way too many people slap stuff on because they think it looks cool, and don't look at what it does to the car or if the car is really capable of handling it

for example, on a 968, with a 19, the outside diameters are off too much, even in an extremely low 35 series tire - the wheels are too heavy for the spindles - suspension issue are sure to happen too - also, forget about lowering the car with an 11" rear - you're going to bang the inside top for sure - i can imagine a lowered car would also have front "full turning" issues

there is a memo out by porsche about fitting wheels too - they are forbidding the dealerships from oversizing wheels

all that being said, to see if it works on the 993, check the offsets as a starting point - then compare outside diameters with tires - if all that works out ok, then a fit check will need to be done to see if the new "extended corner" interferes with anything during suspension travel

I do know that there are several people who have put 19 inchers on the 993. Why is completely beyond me, but they have been able to fit them in there. There are at least 2 993ers on Rennlist that have done that to my knowledge. I would think that 17 inchers on the 968 are plenty--they fill up the wheel wells and it is a Porsche supported size...

again, i would look well beyond whether or not "somebody else has done it" - you know the old "2 wrongs don't make a right" thing

a general rule of thumb is to take a look at the OEM specs - make sure the tires have the proper load capacity - stay within about 2% of the O.D., stay within 10% of the OEM weight (including tire), and then check the interference issues of the particular setup during full suspension travel and you should be fine

that still doesn't take into account issues with rim damage on rough roads and such, or ride quality, but at least following those guidelines should keep you out of trouble with failure of componentry
