Thinking about new wheels and tires
#1

It is about time to buy some new shoes for my 968. Instead of buying some 16's I found some 18's on Discount Tire Direct. The thing I was wondering about is what size should I get the tires if I go those?

Can you zero us in a little closer on the ones you are considering? That link is just to the main site.

Sure, sorry about that....

These are the wheels I am looking at:

18 Replicas

With that wheel which is an 18X8, I don't know which tires to get with them. I know that the stock ones are a different sizes. Even if I did all four of the wheels 18X8 don't the rear tires need to be lower profiles than the front?

This next link shows the optional tires sizes which are 225/40/18 and 255/35/18

I imagine you're going to get many - widely varying - opinions about the wisdom of putting equal-sized wheels on all corners. Ride, handling, look will all be affected. On my car, my 18" wheels are 8.5" width in front and 10" in back. Tire sizes are 245/40 and 275/35. You must be alert to the wheel offsets. Mine are 52 in front and 47 in back - the back really should be more, and I had to deal with tire interference (again, though, 10" wide). Based on how my car handles, I'd guess you'd end up with substantially more oversteer - maybe more than you'd like.

In any other front engine, rear drive car having the same wheels and tires all around is common practice. You have the advantage of being able to rotate to even out the wear and prolong tire life, as well as balanced handling.

The 968 has been traditionally been equipped with larger rear tires and wheels, mainly for styling purposes, I think, to fill out the large flared fenders back there.

If you are moving up to 18's ,presumably for the looks, then I think the recommendation would be for the 18 X 8 up front and the 18 x 10 rears. 235-40 and 275-35 tires respectively.

You also said that it was mostly done for styling instead of performance. Would it be ok to go with 18X8 all the way around? It would make it a lot easier to rotate them and keep the tires longer.

It may not be the #1 option, but they will fit and the car will drive just fine.
