Wheel question
#1

I ran into an issue recently I was unaware of and need some insight. My wife busted a wheel and after getting her home on the spare I took the wheel in for repairs and tried a couple of wheels laying around to run until the repair is done. My 968 has 18" turbo twists OEM from a 996. I have an extra 18 inch turbo twist front wheel that carries a 993 part number. The hub bore on this wheel tapers sharply on this wheel and will not work on the front hubs of the 968. I tried a couple of other wheels I have around and found several that won't fit, including OEM Boxster 17s and Cup2s from a 993. A 17" Cup 1 with a 965 part number does fit however. Has something been done to the hubs on my 968 or is this just the way it is. I had the 16 Cup 1s on the car when I got it 6 years ago and have put 3 different sets of wheels on it but never ran into an issue until now. I have had D90s on it and a set of two piece aftermarket Cups. The outside diameter of the wheel is not too small, it is the sharp taper on the inside that prevents the wheels from going flush to the hub. I didn't realize just how many wheels I had laying around the basement covered up but I have pretty much at least one of everything stock since the early 90s. I amazed at how many won't go on the front of the 968.

i had this very problem when i had my wheels built - the hubs are indeed a problem on some wheels - people have either had to machine out the back of the wheel, or get spacers to push the wheel out so it clears the hub

Thanks Flash. I was worried I had some non standard hubs. When I bought the car at a significant discount due to a shuddering problem I found non 968 discs on the car which caused the ABS system to not work properly.

well, i can't say whether or not you have non-standard hubs, but i can say that they are a limiting factory with some wheels - it is both the diameter and the amount of protrusion, depending on the wheel
