What was the 1st thing you changed?
#1

As I wait another day for my 68 to arrive , I was wondering. What was the first thing that you changed on your 968?

The tires! The previous owner decided to put his 911 tires on the 968. Not a good match. The car felt like it was moving on its own.

I sort of look at a car like buying a house - you have to live with it to find the problems. However, after a couple of tweaks here and there all is good.

If by "changed," you mean replaced, it was the AC clutch, which froze and caused the belt to snap. This was followed closely by taking apart and cleaning the starter, and the plug wires, which were arcing. The first, and so far only, mod was drilling four holes in the air box, which you should do a search for, as it is a very easy and cheap way to add about 10 hp. Best of luck with the car.

That plus a radiator and some gearbox fluid.

I'm guessing that your question was more aimed at "What was the first modification you did?" rather than "What was the first failure you had to fix?". In my case, the first "mod" was the addition of protective side moldings - my car is a daily driver so I knew it would be exposed to many ding situations. It was a good mod, as my doors are still ding-free after 75k miles in just over 3 years with lots of parking lot risk. The next mod was the installation of a Clifford alarm system with remote locking and trunk release. Lots more, if you're interested.

Anchorman's analysis notwithstanding, I replaced the crappy plastic hinge on the center console. The previous owner had the hinge (a $20 part at the time) fail and simply Velcro'ed the door to the well it fits over. I got the proper hinge and took the five minutes to replace it.

The first mod I did was much like Anchorman's: I got magnetic moldings after getting a doozy of a ding in a parking lot. These magnetic moldings may not be the prettiest but I love 'em.

Bob, I'm on my third hinge, so I'm with you on that. Don't forget the glove box door repair - virtually a necessity. But there are many of the "must do" things - HCV immediately comes to mind. But, on the "don't have to but did" list is also the KLA strut tower brace, KLA front sway bar braces, and many more. Still two of my favorite mods are mirror-related: a new inside rearview mirror with auto-dimming and a compass, and a European driver's side OSRV mirror that is mildly convex, giving much better coverage than the US flat mirror.

right after i purchased the car 3 years ago, at 23k miles, my first mod was more of a list:

M030 swaybars, delrin bushings, zimmerman rotors, porterfield 4S pads, stainless lines

at the same time i did belts, rollers and waterpump and tires

the first repair was the DME relay

Three weeds ago, when I arrived home with my 'new' car after 2,300 miles, I installed the DME relay, then did the airbox mod., installed the RS Barn chip, K&N filter, strut brace, new brake pads and off the to track the next weekend for a two day DE. Is there such a thing as 968 overload? My wife thinks so I still have a list of changes to make.

Cheers,

I'm wondering if anyone does NOT have "...a list of changes to make." As much as I think I've done, the list doesn't seem to get any shorter.

The first mods I made were new 968 floor mats, KLA strut tower brace, and a windscreen to keep that autumn draft off my neck when the tops down.

After that the flood gates opened and it seems that every month I'm adding some sort of mod.

Luckily, I have only had to make a few repairs and they were inexpensive but I'm going through a preventive maintenance phase a the moment.

The most expensive mod I've made was replacing the worn and tattered convertible top.

I highly recommend starting small and work your way in to it. The 968Engineering air box bolts are very handy. Also Harvey's door sills add a nice touch.

Good Luck

my list is getting shorter - that's for sure - it's taken a solid 3 years, and a lot more money than i am willing to discuss within earshot of my other half

over the next 3 weeks, i'm finishing up the last things for quite a while

then of course......................

BINGO, but I'm enjoying the way many interpreted the question and I find the lists interesting.

Thanx guys

I've been slowly doing maintenance stuff mostly, but my first mods will be

ROW lenses

airbox + K&N + chip if my ECU can take it

thinking about painting my front brake calipers so I have 'little reds'

I'm worried about trashing my airbox by trying that air-box mod, mainly cause I don't trust my own ability to do stuff like that

However, the first actual "mod" I did, was Iridium plugs, and new red wires from Paragon. Although I'm sure that's more maintenance than a mod lol

The first thing I did was remove the outrageuos 12" sub-woofer with 1 - 200 watt 4 channel amp and a secondary 2 channel amp (wattage ?) that was custom installed in the rear. This was part of a $7409.00 voice activated system that included a 12 disc CD changer (installed in DS rear well), in-dash DVD LCD with GPS navigation, new interior speakers throughout, back up camera and 2 way alarm. Sounded amazing (but very embarrassing) - I was the envy of every 18 yr. old kid on the block. Other than that, the car was confirmed in mint condition with thorough PPI, full documentation with stamped dealer book and 58K km put on by 1 previous owner. Car is fantastic! I wasn't so fortunate though when I bought the S2 cab a few years earlier - spent about $2K in the few weeks.

P.S. Anybody looking for a "very cool", blow your mind, cutom fit sub-woofer with amps - CHEAP

deja vu.... scary thought that someone else bought a car where the P.O. did the same thing to my 92 cab! I hauled a similar set up out of the car the first week. Then the list of mods and maintenance started and has not stopped since. Still, the car runs well now and it's rare enough that it holds its own in new company.
