Well I entered my Amethyst Dazzler into a Concours competition in September.. The new category adopted in the rules are " 75 % unrestored and 21 years or older"......This should be fun as I learned all about Concours competitions in Monterey at the Werks Reunion in 2016. I was a rookie judge of the 996"s.

Clean, clean ,clean.....nothing in there that does not belong ....only stuff that came with the car.........should be fun,,,looking forward to it in September....will keep you posted.

I just got my 968 back from the body shop this week where I had the front bumper and grills repaired and painted.

I also got it inspected, but have a problem with the 3rd brake light not fully lighting across the bar.  How does one service this piece ?

I took the two screws out and there are no wires to the light itself, but there is a wire ground that apparently makes this unit light up?

Do I have to replace the entire unit or just clean up the grounds a bit ?

Stephen,

At the top of the forum page you will see the search bar, click the little gear thing to the right of the bar and do a search for third brake light. There are a number of posts which discuss using LED lights, changing bulbs, etc. I believe you will have to obtain the proper bulbs and solder them into the board. There has been some experience with LED strips, but the problem seems to be that it makes your cruise control inoperable because the resistance is so vastly different between LEDs and regular incandescent bulbs.

As Flash would always remind us, "search is your friend".

Unless you are converting to LED you do not need to solder bulbs in...remove the insulation from the underside of the trunk lid, remove the 3rd brake light, the rest is pretty straight forward from there.

Drove it.  Doesn't happen as frequently this time of year.  Turned over 69k miles.

She in the garage. Top up. Got touch up paint from touchupdirect as the Judges at the Concours complaint about small imperfections in the front. Also trying to keep her out of the ash from the Camp fire. Brake pad light came on. Might be time for new pads.

Kaj, for what it's worth, my brake pad light came on while we were in Sonora this summer. It went out and came back on intermittently on the way home. It hasn't come on since.

you may have loosened the connector wire.  If it loses connection between the wire in the pad and whatever it connects to on the suspension it turns on the warning light (same as if the rotor cut through it as the pad wears).  The connector might have reseated itself, re-establishing the circuit.

To be fair, that was a particularly brutal group of roads that we drove. Interestingly enough, the only light on my car that didn't go on after that drive was my brake pad indicator light!

Kaj, I have a set of stock pads that are nearly new if you need them.

Put an original cs steering wheel in my car and deleted the airbag , used the 3ohm resistor trick and that works perfect .

Also installed a 30mm spacer to get the the wheel closer to my body and get more leg room .

Should have done it 10 years ago , so much better .

I removed the interior temp sensor in my 94 Cabrio, and cleaned it up, re-installed it. Climate control unit is working great (fingers crossed), and I took it up to the North Shore for a top down drive.

After buying my cab this past spring I knew I would need to address the brakes this winter (my maintenance season).

So I replaced all four brake rotors, eight pads, and four pairs of wear sensors.

I decided to use genuine Porsche parts because the difference in price between Porsche and non-Porsche OEM was only about +20% thanks to good prices from Sunset. I may have wasted some $ but it just feels right for me when the price is that close. I wasnt looking to upgrade the brakes.

This cured a grinding sound/feeling that had been increasingly occurring during low speed braking, especially while turning right. I figured the grinding was caused by either wheel bearing(s) or more likely the significant ridge on the outer edge of the rotors.

The rotors were worn almost 2mm and needed to be replaced. The pads were at approximately 60% and still had life left, but I dont like using old pads on new rotors and I didnt know how old the pads were. I also suspected they could be part of the noise problem.

The old brake fluid was in disgusting condition, over 4% moisture per my meter and who knows how old. I pressure flushed about 1.5 liters through the system, but I ran into one caliper that didnt like to be bled. It just oozed fluid slowly instead of flowing freely. I am wondering if there is gunk in that caliper?? I am going to try again later. The pedal is firm and the braking is even (after bedding in the pads).

The front wheel bearings felt fine and I didnt bother to repack them at this time as I needed to get the car back on the road.

After some paintwork to repair a nasty upward hood ding caused by my mechanic remounting the power steering reservoir too high (sigh), I will tackle a door latch issue which I suspect is a broken plastic arm or two.

That's a lot of work, you can now take a well deserved BREAK. ;-) :-).

IMO, you can never go wrong going with Porsche OE parts even if you have to spend considerably more vs. aftermarket alternatives.

Today Ava2 (my Aventurine Cab) visited a very talented PDR (Paintless dent removal) man.

He was able to completely remove the nasty upward dent on my hood. The dent had been caused by a mechanic remounting my power steering reservoir too high and shutting the hood on it.

He also took care of three ripples on the top of one of the fenders.

I had heard about impressive results from good PDR practitioners before, but this was my first personal experience.

Here are a couple of before photos.

I've used dent removers before on my cars and the really good ones can work wonders!  That's a really nasty dent on your hood, he was able to fix that!  How did the paint turn out?
