Hi I chanched the belts yesterday.



When the car became warm the belt began to squeek.

Wining a little bit. Today the wining is gone.

But I see some very little drops of coolant at the bottom of te car.

I can not find out where is is coming from. The hcv is dry. I disambled the front covers and also there as I can see at the front of the waterpump it is dry also.



If the pump starts to leak? Could it be at the back side?? It is hardly to believe?



Has anybody had the same problem in the past??

If it's an old water pump, better change it quick. If it's new...something's wrong on how it was installed...would be my guess.

It is an "older" waterpump. I'm going to order a new one. Any recommondations?

a rebuilt or a OEM one?

Do NOT use a rebuilt pump!!!!!!! A new pump is more expensive but is cheap compared to the cost of replacing the rebuilt one again. Ask me how I know... <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/sad.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/sad.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Yup, I bit the bullet too and went with a new Porsche unit. Cost like $300 bucks or so for the part alone. Ouch!

I put a new Porsche WP on my 968 too. Got it from Sunset who ordered it from Germany. On some car parts, I usually go with Porsche brand. WPs and Tbelts are two of these. However, on my S4 928, I did buy a Porsche rebuilt (from Germany, not California). It looks great. I went with the plastic impeller to avoid block damage if it lets go. There are companies that say that they sell WP rebuilts "from the same US company that does them for Porsche." If this is true, I wonder why my latest Porsche rebuilt WP came from Germany. It was a total and very well done rebuild. Looks new. Came with gasket, all new bolts, etc.



BTW, I have a used WP with about 25K miles on it. I took it off and put a new WP on "while I was in there."

Anyone know what can be done with a used 968 WP? Anyone paying for core units...or does anyone want to take a chance on a 25K unit?

Yep my Porsche dealer recommend the rebuilt version from Germany so I bought one.

Everything is with it, and a third of the price of a new one. And of course with Porsche warranty.

That's good to know. I'm planning to replace mine when I do my belts soon, but the price of a new one is totally outrageouos. I'll have to check with my dealer about a warranteed rebuilt one.



This seems to be somewhat of a "hot" topic, with several people saying not to go with a rebuilt one based on past bad experiences. Any happy rebuilt pump users out there? I'm in the very unusual circumstance of owing the IRS a lot of money this year (underestimated impact of my wife's going back to work <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/mad.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> ), so I'm trying to save money wherever I can get away with it. I'd much rather put the money into a DE weekend later in the year...

Often, but not always. In my case, the only thing really at stake is my time, since I'll be doing the job myself. $300+ for a metal enclosure with an internal impeller attached to a shaft is utterly ridiculous. But if the consensus is that rebuilt pumps are unreliable, I guess I'll have to bite the bullet.

Almost 1 year after renewing the pump with an original rebuild pump from Porsche, I have to say that the rebuild program from Porsche is as good as a new one. The price for a rebuild from Porsche is 315 euro and a brand new one from Porsche is 820 euro in Europe. So the recommandation from th eOPC to use a rebuilt pump with Porsche quarantee is the solution.



The rebuild looked exact the same as the old pump and that was an original one.



I still happy with it.

Thanks, this makes sense, and I'm glad to hear you've had a good experience with a rebuilt pump. I can't for the life of me understand why a rebuilt pump shouldn't be every bit as reliable as a new one. To me, it's like the starter - what does a new one of these cost, something like 600 bucks? I, and many others, are very happy with my $95 refurbished starter from Sunset, and a water pump is no more complex a device than a starter, maybe even less so.
