92 A/C upgrade, anyone done it?

My car was at the dealer yesterday for a check-up. I have a list of smaller things to fix, no big deal. One issue that I knew about was my A/C is not working. The dealer said that they would go about replacing a number of parts ($320) to bring it up to R134A standard. Then charge the system. Now, that may or may not fix it. They would add the dye and if a line or the compressor was bad that would additional cost. Have any of you 92ers done the upgrade? i don't use the A/C very often but I like to have everything in the car working correctly. What would you do? Thanks

if i understand this, you need to repair the system, AND at the same time, update it - is this because he does not want to use R-12? it can still be found, though quite pricey



there are a few people who have done the changeover - it did involve replacing seals, and fittings in the ones i know of



you could try enviro-safe - it is supposed to be an R-12 compatible refrigerant

Bob, I'm guessing that since my system is not working I have some kind of problem. I guess the place to start is to get the system recharged with R12 and the dye and see where the problem is. If it is a smaller fix then I'll get that done and I'll be set. If not (like the compressor is bad) then I'm thinking I'll do the upgrade. The dealer says they don't do R12 anymore and only do the upgrades. Where can you find R12? Thanks

you have to hunt around for the R-12 - not sure where it is, but guys here say they can get it



i wouldn't recharge it first - i'd pressureize it and use the dye to find the leak, but at the cost of the R-12, and the obviously ecologically detremental effects, i think i would wait until i knew what was wrong before having it just escape back into the atmosphere

I use the hydrocarbon stuff this summer and it was amazing. It took me 5 minutes and $50 to do. I blows really cold, like American Caa. Follow the thread http://www.968forums.com/index.php?showtopic=905



I bought the stuff from a guy on ebay that sells the kit with an instructional cd. Get an A/C pressure gauge and your set or buy the fill kit with the gauge. http://stores.ebay.com/CFA-Services



I also did the to a 65 Mustang with Factory Air. Fantastic!

Bob,

This is sad but when I talked to the dealer and a local shop they both told me there is no program to dispose of the collected R12. The most that can be done is that it is collected and reused in other R12 vehicles. Sure, they aren't making any more but as for what is left, it sounds like its eventual destination is to be discharged into the atmoshpere. Have you heard different?

well, if you are out of refrigerant, there is no R-12 to dispose of, so i'm not sure what the issue is



last i heard, they were still making it, but not in the US - search around here - it was discussed, and as i remember, a supplier noted



all that being said, i support the switch to eviro-safe - supposedly no alterations need to be made to the system

I had my '92 switched over to 134a 2 years ago, by a shop in central Jersey - I have access to

R-12, but chose not to use it for environmental reasons. Production of it was discontinued in 1994 and it

was banned in US and many countries because of fear of damage to the ozone layer. Clean Air Act stuff.

Cost was less than $300 - and the air blows cold, but ice cold? Don't think so. Porsche heaters

are great, but never heard of a Porsche a/c that really exceeded expectations. Since my a/c had no

chill left, I hypothisized that the R-12 had all leaked out already, and that the purging the system and

converting to R-134a would not expose the environment to any additional R-12 from my car. The stuff

lasts for 102 years, and wreaks havoc up there...



The shop I used may have converted some fittings for the conversion, but I don't know specifics. I do know

that if I have leaks, I am not going to shred the ozone any more with the 134a.

Last week I bought a brand new compressor, condensor and dryer for my baby. I will almost renew 85 procent of the system. The only thing I do not renew is the "thing" under dashboard.

That was not leaking anyway. Don't ask me what the costs were. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/sad.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> But luckily I have some friends. into the busniss. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />



The adapters for using R134a are already connected to the system. Is is necessary for changing from R12. as also you have to change the compressoroil as well. This is also different. And for the future it will be handy when you have new leak tot ad some fluor aswell. The leaks will be visible with an UV light.
