Repairs and prices in the hinterland
#1

I just bought a 1992 968 coupe. Guards red. LSD. So I'm a happy guy.

I want to replace the Water Pump, Thermostat, Timing and Balance Shaft belts (plus rollers and tensioner).

All as preventative maintenance.

(Yes, I already changed the oil and the air filter.)

The local Porsche/Audi dealer wants BIG bucks.

Local Porsche mechanic wants $850 for the job, which strikes me as a reasonable price.

BUT

He'd be putting in a rebuilt water pump. I can get a NEW water pump from .PelicanParts. for $360, and he wants $350 for the rebuilt part. Hmmmmm. If I provide the parts, he'll install for the same labor charge as he previously quoted, but WITHOUT warranty.

Opinions? Options? Feel like razzing a newbie?

Dude! I've read so many of your posts. I'm honored. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

He wants $350 for the rebuilt water pump.

I'll ask if he will buy from www.pelicanparts.com .

If it's a Porsche dealer using a Porsche reman it's probably not a huge deal. What is the warranty length on there reman part?

i'm surprised that a dealer is allowed to install a reman part - that goes against everything i know about porsche dealership policy

in addition to finding out if he will use your source, i would find out if he what he wants for a new one, and see if that makes sense

Ok. I've obviously been unclear and mucked this up.

The local Porsche dealer wants huge money, but would be using new parts.

The local (non-dealer) mechanic has a great reputation, but his parts source can not provide a new water pump -- they only have reman.

If I provide the (new) part, the non-dealer mechanic will install it (no change in his labor charge, but no warranty).

Tomorrow morning I will ask him if he will use the alternative source and back THAT with a warranty.

Somehow, I doubt that he will.

So. I guess the question is this: If I go ahead and have the non-dealer mechanic do the work, will I end up regretting having a reman part in my car?

The dealership would cost me hundreds more, but I want what's best for my new baby.

i hate it when shops do that, but i understand he wants his mark up on the part - that mark up essentially pays the "insurance" against a predictable number of failures - i would prefer they just raise their hourly rate, and leave the parts out of the equation

fortunately here in california, we have laws that prohibit shops from voiding any warranties like that, regardless of what they say - it does mean that you end up in an argument, and that shop won't deal with you afterward

i find it hard to believe that he won't back up a new part though - try to find out what his cost is on the reman, and offer to split the difference so that you can use the new part - it's found money to him

as for new vs reman, i have not had too many problems with remans, though it has been known to happen - i would have it carefully inspected for seal and bearing fitment and any pitting the case might have in it

In Europe it is not a big deal to ask the OPC to use rebuild parts from Porsche. It is there own program they sell too. Parts with one year warranty.

I talked to the (non-dealer) mechanic today.

Interestingly enough, he would be using rebuild parts from Porsche, with a one year warranty on parts AND labor. He has a great rep, so I'm sold.

Thanks guys! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />
