Mysterious coolant leak
#21

Try some spit or a small dab of grease on the HCV barb will help the new hose to slid on.
I have experienced some of the leaks mentioned above and one which hasn't. There is a drain valve at the bottom of the radiator, left hand side I believe, that was leaking on my car. I had a small pool of coolant on the garage floor every day that I used the car. This valve is rather fragile, being made of plastic, it has a tendancy to break if you mess with it. My advice is don't mess with it without having a replacement on hand. I have also learned that in some cases the fluid I see accumulate on the garage floor isn't always directly below the source of the leak. I didn't identify the valve as a leak source until I removed the lower engine shroud and ran the car without it in place. The source of the leak became more obvious.
Yep.......... strange! Al the screws used at the car are metric. Except that litlle blue screw.

It is withworth!!

When I noticed for replacing it with a metal version. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> I made my own.

Reliability first! instead of weight reduction!

Proof positive that all 968s were in fact produced in Detroit. Just more government propaganda like the fake moon walk. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/laugh.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />
by the way, everybody should be doing a complete coolant flush at least every 2 years
But, that's the role of the HCV. A proactive design: it does it for you. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/laugh.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Finally found out the problem. It is the water pump. Had one replaced in '02. So, I guess 6 years and 24000 miles and it's toast. Going to have belts and rollers checked while there in there. I would have thought that the water pump should be a bit more reliable than 24K miles but I guess not. Anyway glad to found the problem as it was driving me crazy and severily hampered my driving and it's getting warmer and miles to go before I die. So I guess BanditSC gets the prize for his diagnosis.

it's a rubber seal thing - rubber is only good for about 5 years - after that it's pretty much a crap shoot - that's why they recommend a 60k service interval - they figure 12k a year

glad you got it fixed though

Finally found the problem. It was the water pump. It was leaking around the bearing. Had it replaced in 2002 about 24K miles ago. Rather disappointing that it failed it such a short time and mileage. I also had the belts and rollers replaced while the front end was open. I'm so glad to have the car back and everything is working, the odometer ( no more looking at the empty speedo hole), the sun roof switch (damaged by Garmin falling on it). I'm whole again. God I missed driving the 968. I can now work on some cosmetic problems. Scratch on the Instrument panel plastic. Any ideas? Also having a hard time deciding where to go for the weekend on April 26, Herhsey swap meet, ALMS race at VIR or helping IMA get ready for their Grand Opening. Haven't missed a 968 event yet and I'm not sure about the New Mexico Celebration. Frankly, I'm not confident that the 968 can make it to NM without problems. Vroom, Vroom off to give it a test today by driving it around.

Thanks for the tought Mark but it wasn't something that was obvious until IMA opened up the front of the engine. As we observed nothing could been seen from the top. Now feel more confident to run the exhaust recording.
