probably somewhere associated with the connections at the temp display. Turing on the lights triggers a voltage at the display that then reduces the intensity. That connection may have failed due to dirt.

I just noticed last week that my temp gauge was not illuminating all the time at night. Then a few nights ago I pulled into the driveway and the gauge was working. I opened the glove box to get the gate opener out and as soon as I opened the box the gauge lost illumination. Must be a connection that is just starting to go. I figure it is nice to have, but in Texas, where it is hot more often than cold, it is usually reading hot so it isn't a necessary enough gauge to merit digging into things now. It can be about 95 outside and if I park in the sun during lunch the gauge usually reads about 115 or so, so its accuracry isn't always all that great for me.
Oh well. I just decide when I take the dog out if it is warm enough to put the top down. More often than not, it is. I don't need the thermometer to tell me that.
