In a previous post I asked about what belt might be causing a whistling kind of noise that I was hearing towards the front of my engine. Well, cancel that thread.
I poked around a little more this afternoon, this time with a mechanic's stethoscope, and it's not a belt. Maybe I wish it were because I haven't a clue what it could be.
I've attached a couple of pictures showing the location where I hear the noise the loudest with the stethoscope. It's coming from below the intake manifold, close to the bottom of the head, between cylinders 1 and 2. I've posted two pictures to try to show this point. One picture is the engine in the car that actually makes the noise, but since it's a little hard to get a good picture down there I also am showing the point on a bare head I have.
I am pretty certain the noise isn't a leak at the intake gasket because I stuck the stethoscope right at that gasket and the noise was much louder an inch or two below that point. There's nothing inside the head there other than a vertical bore for a head stud.
Any ideas?
