Mechanic in NJ (near Jersey City/NYC)
#1

Hi All,

I used to be an active member of 968.net and have been missing from the forums for some time...

Having said that I have a 1994 968 Cab that needs a fair bit of work and am looking for any recommendations. As a reference, I used to take my 968s to Will at Precision Motorsports in Califon, NJ but am looking for something a little closer.

I purchased this 968 several years ago and it has pretty much been idle without use for almost two years. Over 2 years ago I had Will at PMR do a major service update. Mechanically, it runs straight and strong and just passed NJ inspection.

The list of what I would like done:
- Overall vehicle inspection and oil change
- Heater does not work (but A/C works fine) fix
- Gap on passenger side window where it connects to cab top
- Replace back window
- New paint (perhaps shave door handles - install door poppers)
- Install Euro Lenses
- Remove rear Bumperettes

- Upgrade Stereo/Interior (I'll take this one on myself)

Anyway, should I go forward with all of this (anyone care to guess how much this will run me?) or should I just put this 968 on the market and get myself a beater (will by my first time without a 968 in 8 years)

Thanks in advance!

The way I see it, the two "big ticket" items are the rear window and new paint. There's no practical way I could find to replace the window for less than replacing the entire top and window - I went through this about two years ago, and simply replaced the top. IIRC, it was about $2k - if you're interested, I could check my records. I had the car repainted during the same summer, and that was about $3k. Both jobs were done in the Morristown area.

The rest of the work shouldn't amount to much

For me, there was really no decision - nothing brings out the smile more than driving my 968. You'll have to make that decision for yourself.

I would suggest that the best solution is to take your car to the best mechanic within any reasonable distance.

Will at PMS is absolutely terrific and it would be an excellent suggestion that you reacquaint yourself with him.

Pete at RS Barn is an owner and sponsor here and he is also top notch.

Either of these gentlemen are a great choice. Beyond that, I would be hard pressed to allow anyone to touch my 968.

Thanks for the suggestions. I would prefer something a bit closer but I do have to admit that there is a certain comfort level that comes in dealing with Will at PMR.

I'm due for an oil change anyhow so might as well get an estimate...
