Trunk Carpet
#1

ran out of upload space on other post...

Trunk Carpet:

The glue on the Dside had partially given way, resulting in a slight pouche which then allowed the carpet flap to fall in the cubby.

Got out the trusty epoxy, and "clamped" the carpet in place. (used 5 minute epoxy and let it dry for about an hour).

Put the piping back on and good as new.

Joe, the clothespin idea is brilliant. I have a new project coming up.

New and improved DIY for those of you with no skill, little money, and time on your hands

This is the state of affairs after our magazine haul from OC.

Out of clothes pins if you can believe that, so I went to the Home Depot and found some clamps. Then on to the glue isle. And don' forget the Nitrile gloves (thanks Bob for the tip on those - love them).

Kind of felt like a Samuari as I prepared for battle with the rug.

I never used the Gorilla glue before, but was intrigued by the idea that it "foams". So I put a little blob in a box and let it sit in the sun (sorry guys its about 70 in the sun, 62 in the shade here today). Looked cool so I tried a small section - seemed to work fine. Passenger side. Note the tried and true technique, but the upgraded tools . I'll let it sit overnight and get the other side tomorrow.

Joe,

Looks like you did a nice job. I have a similar problem: saggy flaps over the 2 little side cubbies. They don't stay flat in alignment with the flat middle area, but droop down a bit. Often helped by rolling heavy grocery items that find the low spot. I do have the cargo net (coupe), groceries would be impossible without it, but some things can get loose. Any ideas on that problem, ever seen anything to help saggy cubby flaps?

finished up the Dside. Some of the fabric that is sewn into the carpet piece was disintigrated or gone alltogether (the fabric is what Porsche used to glue the carpet to the metal BTW), so I improvised with some denim. Cut a piece, folded it over the carpet, and glued it to the carpet with the Gorilla glue and clamps.

Then repeated glue up as before. Interesting development. The combination of denim and glue made the whole assembly a wee bit too thick for the rubber piping to fit well. The result was a trunk that would not shut well - not good. Pretty good gap when "closed" and a lot of stress released when you turn the key. You can see the gap between trunk lid and Dside fender below.

So rather than rip the whole thing apart I thought maybe a little persuasion on the rubber molding was in order. Used the heat gun and gently coerced the moulding into place. Worked out OK. Final results.

Roland, firming up the side panel provides the support needed for the horizontal flap. Stuff will still go through for sure, but they don't fall in without help. I did find a piece of supporting material on the underside of the PSide flap that was coming off - so more glue (the circles on the carpet are from weights placed on the glue job).

On a side note I went to the Holiday Bowl with a friend from OC. Due to the educational decisions my son has made I am now a patron of UA, and so I was hoping for a decent return on my investment from the Athletic Dept. Holy crap what a game. UA finished with a 60-odd yard drive at the end of the game and ended up with a total of exactly 100 yards. Looked like boys among men. 0 - 33 final score.

On a final final note I studied that trunk for some time today trying to figure out how to shove a BassLink in there. Not going to happen without 1) losing the spare, and 2) losing a good piece of the carpet that I just fixed. And I'm not even sure it would sound very good buried back in the trunk. Works fine like that in my other car, but completely different system in that car and its a coupe, so all I really need is a little thump rounding out the factory system. In the cab with the top down I need a lot more....

Be careful out there tonight gents.
