968 vs. 944 Carpet set
#1

The carpet in the rear hatch area of my car is badly faded and starting to crumble and disintigrate.

I've done a lot of searching for a replacement set with no luck.
There are a lot of reasonably priced molded 944 carpet sets out there, but no 968 sets.

Buying OEM replacement pieces would run over $2K.

I've been told by the vendors that even the later ('91) 944 set will "not fit" in the 968.

So my question is... which parts will not fit?

My hope is that I can buy a 944 carpet set and make a couple of mods.

Is this a good plan?

Thanks for your help,
Jamie

AFAIK, the cargo floor carpet is different, the spare tire hump is smaller on the 968.
The cargo area sides are the same outside of a few small details.
The carpet for the rear seats is different.
All of the rest is the same.

Thanks Pat.
I had you in mind when I posted the question as someone familiar with both cars.

Is the rear seat difference something that depends on the 968 model year?
I understand the rear seats are different on the later models. Could my '92 be the same as the 944?

Wasn't the spare tire hump also smaller on the later model 944?
The 944 carpet sets I have seen come with an option for a smaller or larger spare tire hump.
Did they make it even smaller on the 968?

Also, can you be any more specific on the slight differences on the sides of the cargo area? Do you think they could be made to fit?

The one difference I expected to hear that you didn't mention is that I think my old 944 had a single back seat fold-down where the 968 is a split fold.

Thanks again,
Jamie

Had a chance to look at what I think was an '88 944 today.
Looks like the carpet differences in tha back are from the shoulder strap reals for the rear seats. There weren't any on that model year 944.

Anybody know if the later models had shoulder belts in the rear seats?

Thanks,
Jamie

Are there any aftermarket carpets for 968 with better sound isolation maybe?

You will probably need to use dynomat or a simalar material.
I think my be a few post on where to install it.

There is also new lighter weight material called lizard skin. I have no experiance with it though.

Marazas,

Problem is that there don't seem to be any carpet sets for the 968 of any variety.
All of my searching has turned up nothing.

Ok, thanks! There is probably too small market for that...

Considering the age of our cars, the market for a 968 carpet set should be growing.
Though the tepid response to my question would indicate that it is still pretty small.

The only option out there seems to be the one in the thread about a custom set for around $1K.
But that's not molded to fit (wrinkles, more difficult for a DIY, etc.) and way more than the price of a molded 944 set.

I'll keep looking.
Please reply if anyone has any ideas on converting a 944 carpet set, availability of a 968 set, or any other advice.

Thanks,
Jamie
