Trouble in rebuild land
#1

Everything is setup to time my cams. I have the factory adaptor to pressurize the variocam. However, when I apply the prescribed 45psi continuous air I am not getting the expected result. One, I hear about as much air flowing out as I am putting in. And 2 the variocam top tensioner does not move. One source of the air leakage is from the slot under the solenoid.

I am worried that in the disassembly and cleaning I put something together wrong, left out some o-ring, or made some other rookie mistake. Ideas?

Does anyone have their variocam off the head right now? Knowing where things are supposed to go would help a lot. I might do myself bodily harm if I have to pull the cams out to get the variocam off.

What he hears is normal. It's just a bleed and doesn't affect timing cams. Even with variocam pressurized with air , the piston still cycles up and down as you rotate crank. This lets air bleed at different speeds and shoots oil vapor all over the place.

Pete took a big load off my mind and has been an immense help both with parts and advice in this endeavor. Public thanks to you!!
Doing this is really not that hard, but until you've been through it (and gotten advice from those that already have), it's a b**ch. If possible I will add some to the DIY writeup on this that Sparky posted.
BTW, my cams are now timed

What would really be cool is to incorporate this DIY in to a "How to do a head gasket" DIY ready for say, this winter, hint, hint. I have had most of the top off without any problems but when I see those cams and the dreaded variocam I cringe and go back to my safe spot. There are probably a dozen tools and 6 dozen tricks to take hours off the process that only the initiated could relate.
