The glass guys BROKE THE GLASS!!!!!
#1

<rant on>

Yes, I'm pissed - I hired a 20 yr auto glass veteran from a big company to come out and boom goes the glass!

My son was watching and here's what happened - they were cutting around the seal and were about half way done when they decided to take a soda break. While sitting there, KABOOM goes the glass!!!

And they WON'T pay for a new one! Yes, they made that clear at the start...at least they agreed not to charge me for the screw up. How nice of them <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/sad.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

So here I sit in smelly vapor, waiting for my ....

Anyone know where I can get a NEW or USED glass?

I haven't a clue where to start, and the glass folks checked their sources and can't get one. (Or they don't want to, whatever...)

</rant off>

Wow, that's too bad!! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/sad.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/sad.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> I don't know where to get one, but you could probably start with the Porsche Dismantlers.

I recently researched this and none of the suppliers had any rear hatch glass assemblies as of a couple weeks ago. Inventory changes all the time so you will want to call them again.

A new assembly from Porsche is $4800 from Sunset and it has to come from Germany.

Check with whackiewes, he is considering going lexan in back.

There is a company out there on ebay doing acryllic hatches.

That is a MAJOR drag. Dumbs***s.

One more thing - if you end up getting a whole new (or used) frame and glass assembly, I will be very interested in taking your old frame off your hands.

Best,

I thought somebody (Harvey I think) commented that they think the glass from a 944 hatch would work. Not sure but it might be worth a try. I have friend that the same think happened. He was doing it himself and when he took a break, it cracked on its own. He was looking into Lexan.

Call dC Automotive and ask for Richard. Looks like he has one in stock for $800. Good folks to do business with.

rpm - thnks, they have the glass for $800 and the frame for $30 in stock according to their website.

I'm on the phone with USAA right now. It looks like they will cover it, minus my $500 deductible...

Can I poach that frame from DC Automotive? I don't want to jump in and screw up things for you.

Cheers,

Go ahead - i just called them and the glass is *complete*, already mounted on the frame. So I don't need the separate frame.

He's gonna email me some pics of the glass before I confirm to ship it.

My hatch is in!!!! The glass company is on the way to Porsche with the check - we'll be installing it at 3 this afternoon. (as long as the glass guys say there's no damage to the glass)

Yes, I WILL take a lot of pics!

Stay tuned...

Anyone eligible for USAA insurance that does not use them is a fool.

Good to know!

Just put the hatch in! I still have a LOT of work to do!

I have to move the hatch anchors over, cut the old wiring harness for the wiper motor and third brake light and move it over and solder it back together - then reinstall all the trim.

It will be re-tinted on Monday.

Update - the glass guys came out and bent the tabs back. They weren't that hard to bend.

They said the *wavy* glass was NOT a stress area, but a slight defect.

So, i'll be putting everything back together...stay tuned for pics of the finished product...
