Hatch Glass repaired
#1

My hatch glass had lost it's seal to the frame at the top and was making annoying rattling sounds (let alone letting wind and water in). I took it to a local auto glass chain that has a great reputation and the manager was very familiar with the problem; said he had done 15 or so over the past several years. Said that only one had broken. I left it with them while I was out of town for a couple of days and picked it up today. It looks and sounds great! They removed the hatch assembly, removed the frame, cleaned the glass, reglued and sealed. A very professional and good looking job. You'd have to look real close to see it wasn't OEM.

Best part: it only cost me $120!

That's a great price. My seal is working OK but looks shaky, peeling in places. I don't need an exact replica type job but I would like it to look clean. Any pictures? Have you checked to see if the defogger still works?

It would be laughable if not pathetic to take one to a Porsche dealer to get an estimate, I'd bet something like $1500.

I haven't checked the defogger yet and will post pictures. I did get a quote from Porsche for a new hatch: $1400.

Wow, very interested what dealership got you that quote. The last one I received from a Porsche dealer was $4800.

The quote came from Prestige Imports in Denver. The glass company was Elite Auto Glass, with several operations in the Denver area.

Yeah, they may have accidentially quoted the wrong part number or something. I just called Prestige and they told me $5400.

I knew the rear hatch is ridiculously expensive, just did not realize (until now) how absurdly expensive it is ! If mine separates, it may be worth the drive all the way to norskiepete's shop to repair it <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/rolleyes.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> (

LOL, I was thinking the same thing. What a fantastic excuse to do a California/Oregon/Idaho/Utah/Colorado and back road trip.

Was it a national chain, or did you just go to a glass repair shop? I am looking to get mine done when I get my car tinted, and am trying to shop around. $120 would seal the deal for me!

I'd almost drive to Denver for a $120 hatch glass reglue. What a deal!

I finally got some pictures taken of the repaired hatch this weekend. For those interested in taking a drive to Denver, the place that did the work was Elite Auto Glass on 5701 E. County Line Rd., Highlands Ranch, CO. (303) 221-3700. Ask for Rodney Schroth, the Manager. I am VERY pleased with the work.

It looks great Pete, I think I'll start shopping around in Boston. I've heard some really crazy prices to get this work done, like $1K+.
