TRANSMISSION DIAGNOSIS NEEDED!
#21

Ernie,

I don't know if you saw my post on having my transaxle rebuilt. It's here. I had similar symptoms, trouble engaging second gear, although I had trouble with first gear as well. As mentioned, my rebuild cost me right around $1k. It has been a little over a year since the rebuild, and I have had no trouble with the transaxle.

Jon,

Yes, I did see your post. $1000 is an amazing price for an overhaul.

Now that the Mobil 1 gear oil has been in the car for about 300 miles, I can say that my gearbox appears to be perfectly "normal". However, at 82K miles, I have yet to fail my pinion bearings. I still have both stub shaft axle seals to replace, but that should be relatively easy and fits within a Saturday work session.

Thanks for your assistence.

Mine 968 has also problems with 2nd gear. Mechanic thought it might be because of poor clutch, but I'm not sure because all other gears shift fine. So could be 2nd gear's syncro. We changed the diff-fluids with new Mobil, but no big effect. I've planned to update shifter with shortsifter, so I could check the shifterlinks from the front (not big help, I suppose).

It seems that 2nd gear synchros are not the best part of this car. Too bad, it would be the nicest gear to use, espec. when using revs and engine potential on the streets.

How do you guys see this, could this be somehow clutch related problem? does the clutch cylinder settings affect in any way to 2nd gear shifting, if other gears are ok? Clutch replace is quite easy work to do, but other issues takes more time, which chould be done when updating driveline related things (flywheel; LSD; pinion bearing, etc.).

the first thing i would do is verify the shifter position and action - if it is out of adjustment, or the bushing is worn, it could do this

it should be dead vertical left to right when in neutral, and should be tipped back 5 degrees

there should not be an abnormal feeling of slop or looseness
