tip woes?
#1

Grr.. My 94 coupe has developed some frighteningly expensive noises iin the rear end. The first sign was a slow engagement of forward gears, then engaging with a thump. Took it to my favorite local shop and they couldn't find anything. Shortly after that (4 miles) it developed a gear howl and some scarey rattling noises. Shifting and operation was otherwise okay, but i think there might have been some dragging.

Any suggestions on where to start?

Seriously, My TIP expertise is limited to that it might be the rubber thingy in the flywheel .

If you can find a competent independent mechanic that is well versed in the tip, you would be miles ahead. That thing is like servicing the space shuttle.

Sam, that "rubber thingy" in the tiptronic driveline is the Flex Plate. Very likely to be your problem, if not, it could be the bearings inside the torque tube from the engine to the transmission. Good luck, bob Blackwell.

Okay - the returns are in, and one complete Tip rebuild later its working just fine. My flex plate is in great shape, but was the only thing that was... Apparently the failure started two years ago when the radiator split between the tranny cooler section and the engine coolant. shudder..

The guys at Sientific in Pasadena did their usual excellent work.

Mind me asking how much a compete Tip rebuild set you back? I don't need one, but with two tip 968s in the stable, it's something I may have to face some day.

The total came to $4400, but that includes some ancilliary work. I doubt that there is any combination of failures that could cost much more - mine was pretty much sacked, and considering that it lasted some 160000 miles even with the abuse it got... I've seen worse...
