TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER REPLACEMENT
#21
Also, I want to say that the advice (given in one DIY write-up) to remove that item is a bit misplaced. I saw no reason whatsoever to have removed it after I did so and realized it was just a crude check valve. Leave it alone!
It sometimes pops out and gets lost when you compress the tensioner. Go ahead and leave it in there, and when it gets lost you can go look for it. Or just take 5 seconds and remove it.

Those cheesehead bolts do strip all the time. 968turboS tells me he never strips them. Well whoopie! I strip them often enough to hate them, like most people. I like replacing cheesehead bolts with stainless allen head bolts if there is enough clearance, so far 20k miles on allens holding down my cams, and 3k miles on allens holding on the pressure plate. Every time I've had to go back to those areas, I always laugh at the lack of fear in opening allen bolts. Not "recommending" just saying it definitely works. $.02

I have a helper hold the cams+chain in the air while I compress the tensioner by hand and stick it between the cams. I tried the coat hanger trick and it worked in holding the thing compressed. But I went with the manual method anyway just to prove it can be done without special tools.

I checked on availability and cost of a replacement check valve with Sunset Porsche. These little babies are $179 per copy (not very cheap), but more importantly, Sunsets inventory system indicated that there are absolutely none in stock at any Porsche dealer in the USA; and, the factory only indicates a total inventory of 5 of these things in the world. So, I think you should be safe and remove the item......carefully!

Another note for consideration: When you replace the cam carrier bearing cap bolts, more than likely, the new bolts will NOT come with washers. Apparently, these bolts, in the past, were sold with an inegral washer that would not fall off the bolt (a concern during assembly of the bearing caps!). I have made (2) separate purchases of these bolts from Sunset Porsche, and the bolts are the correct ones......but, did NOT include the washers. I verified this with Sunset. I made a trip to ACE Hardware, and picked up M8 hardened steel washers for about 17 cents a piece.

I mention this so that no one makes the mistake of installing the bolts without washers. If you do, I would be concerned that the steel heads on the bolts would cut into the alloy material that the bearing caps are made from.

Start by searching for and downloading the "workshop manual" but be warned; its not that straight forward, I Think that's why there is so much discussion about it. Word is Pete from RSBarn has the magic touch on these so depending on your local and $$.....
