Hi all, Just got the car out of winter storage and the temp gauge needle keeps getting stuck way high. The fans seems to be cycling on an off normally but the gauge reads full hot. It has happened twice now and each time the needle eventually drops like a rock to normal -last time i pulled over and checked- the fans weren't even on -then i turned the car on and off twice and the needle dropped in free fall. Any help is appreciated- Brett

Sounds like a sticky thermostat. Or perhaps it's an electrical issue either with a poor ground or questionable temp sensor.

I'd verify the temp before driving too far - hopefully it's not getting that hot...

needle is dropping too fast- even a stuck thermo when breaking free wouldnt cause a free fall i'm talking a split second drop from top to actual temp

Erratic gauge indcations sometimes indicate failure of the gauge itself. Next time the needle fluctuates to the high end of the scale, tap on the face of the instrument cluster at a spot adjacent to the temp gauge. If the needle drops back down, it's likely the gauge is at fault. These gauges can usually be repaired.

I had the same issue and I was afraid that I was overheating and would damage the engine. It turned out to be a bad gauge. I got a unit from a bone yard.

The gauge acted normal and I felt much better,
