Running the engine in Park with no fluid in the tip?
#1

Folks,

Anyone know if it would be safe to run the engine (not driving of course) with the tip in Park or Neutral, and no fluid in the trans. Maybe 5-10 minutes at a time. The plastic trans fluid reservoir is broken. Trying to find one of course, Sunset can get it on expedite from Germany but it'll still be 2-3 weeks. I'd like to run the engine even if the tip has no fluid. And if anybody has a spare one, or suggestions, please let me know. Thanks!

even in park and neutral the pump is turning with the engine running which could cause damage. Why do you want to run the engine?

Rick, the only reason is to just run it once in a while (under the principle of letting it sit for a couple of months isn't a good idea). And the sequence of checkout / repair: make sure the engine runs right (should be no problem), make sure the trans is good, then suspension, then tires, then lights and other systems, then body work, then... a little green smelly pine tree hanging from the mirror <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />.

I think it is pretty clear that this is a really bad idea.

Is the pump for the trans fluid electric? If so just disconnect it or pull the fuse and there will be no issue. The pump running while dry would be the main issue, the transmission itself wouldn't be damaged from the engine running and the car not moving. If there are any Tip experts around here perhaps they know how the pump works.

Edit..

So it appears from the workshop manual the pump is mechanical within the trans. So if you really want to run the engine, you should be able to pull the torque tube coupler back to disconnect the engine from the trans. I've only done this on manuals so I couldn't say how easy or possible it is with a tip.

That is not easy. Lots of labour for what? a charged battery? For a couple of dollars you could better buy yourselves a charger.

It really not that bad, 10 to 15 minutes. Just jack the car up and unbolt the dust shield and rotate the torque tube till the two allen bolts are exposed, loosen them up, then slide the coupler back towards the trans and tighten up the bolts again if you can to keep it from moving forward.

I think his idea was more towards keeping the oil circulating and seals wet while it sits for a couple of months.

It should only take 1/2 hour to disconnect the coupler.

You forget the converter witch is mounted to the flywheel what also need oil.............

That part cost big bucks too!

Won't do it. Better wait for 3 weeks for the replacement parts.

The torque converter is on the front of the transmission. The damper plate is up front, but that doesn't use oil.

Yep Banditsc you're right. That thing doesn't need oil.

So It is an option to disconnect it.

But why should you if youre parts will arrive within 3 weeks?

$20 and get a battery tender. No need to run the engine and it will make your battery last longer.

Not to continue this, but that wasn't the point here. The battery is one thing, but he really wanted to run the engine. It hasn't been run since the accident and it will be a couple months before the parts come in. It's always good to start the engine up every so often to keep the seals lubed and everything. Part of his process of repairs is to see what is wrong with the car and the engine is a unknown right now since the accident so there may need to be parts ordered for it.

Besides some of us here are real gear heads and smell of exhaust and the sound of the engine is a real motivator.

As I understand in the first mail. The parts should be delivered in 2 till 3 weeks.......I didn't know the exact history??I've never read that is was that long like a couple of months or more.

In that case Banditsc he could try to run the engine with a disconnect tip.

Hi all,

Thanks for all the suggestions and words of advice. Like Bandit wrote, I just wanted to run the engine stand alone to keep the seals moist, keep the oil circulating, look for other things to debug in the meantime. It wasn't just to keep the battery charged. When I went to open the hatch after it was at the body shop for about 3 weeks, the battery was completely dead (unlikely without some problem that I just don't know about yet).

In any case, I ordered the parts on expedite and hope to get them within 3 weeks. About the only other idea I had was to rig some temporary trans fluid reservoir, this could be done with a small hose and some container. But I figure that isn't really worth it. In the meantime I'll start on some of the cosmetic stuff, jack it up all the way and clean / inspect underneath. Search the various sources for other parts, etc. I decided I am not going to mess with trying to start it without the trans fluid.

Leaving it sit for a few months wont dry the seals (years will). I let my cars sit all winter with out starting (done this for years) and never have issues with seals drying out.
