Here is a picture of my temp gauge on the highway at about 75 MPH with the A/C on.

Here is my car idling, see how the gauge rises and then it will drop back down to just above the 1st line. Does this look familiar??

Couldn't fit all the pics, here are the last 2.

I've seen the black plastic bypass valve on waterpump come through undrilled.

Other issue is that the photoos indicate a count problem too from the miles.....
But my car runs the same temps with the airco off. If the airco is on it stays all the time at 8 oçlock.

the gauge is a mechanical thing and may not show an accurate representation of the true temp. I guess there is some way to add a temp sensor and gauge that is not electrical.

Blue,

I'm a little confused. What condition was the very bottom photo taken under? Mine never gets quite that high, but it covers the range shown in your other photos. Thanks for posting.

Hi Cloud,

The bottom Photo is the highest it gets before the fans/t-stat opens and then drops down. I was trying to show how it starts just above the 1st line and then almost reaches the 2nd before returning back to the 1st.

Ah, thanks. Mine doesn't exhibit the behavior you describe to that extent, but then I have a low temperature fan switch. I have to say, mine continues to behave very normally. It's almost as though a few hard runs up to the redline while I was troubleshooting my non-problem knocked something loose, and the coolant is now circulating very nicely. It behaves especially well in traffic, even on a very hot day.

My 968 exhibits the same characteristics that unknown4u describes: the temp gauge moves around when the a/c is off but stays right above 8 without fail when the a/c is on. Doesn't make sense to me, no question it should run hotter with the a/c on all else equal. Could the answer be that the cooling fans automatically run continuously when the a/c compressor is engaged?

Yes they do.

Well there ya go. Guess that makes sense then. In the winter, no a/c of course, the gauge is usually right at 8 o'clock but in the Atlanta summer it'll move upwards, initiating the fans. Then the gauge moves back down to the 8'ish area. Guess that's normal?

That's how I'm convinced my car USED to behave (never getting much above 8:00, no matter what the outside temperature), but now it behaves like Flash describes it should. Very strange...

i'm not sure why some of the cars act one way, and some act another

i do know that the low speed fan coming on at the right time relative to the thermostat plays a role - i just discovered that my low speed fan was not coming on when it was supposed to, due to coolant leaking onto it and shorting it out - this is probably responsible for part of my small temp increase post supercharger - the supercharger itself should not have raised the coolant temp when not on boost - i'll get a chance to prove that theory in a couple of days

check to see that your low speed fans come on just above the 8 o'clock line, and the high speed fans come on after that - so that you know which is which, you can verify the sound of the fan speeds, by conducting the "pin test" i mentioned above

also, the lower pans are responsible for a lot - if those aren't there, the car will run warmer - the same can be said of the plastic cover that sits under the airbox - these components create the negative pressure zone necessary to provide proper flow

"also, the lower pans are responsible for a lot ............"
I can attest to that, coming back from Monterey last Aug. I managed to tear off the lower (front) pan in a motel parking lot. For the rest of the drive the car ran about ten to twenty degrees warmer than normal. Thinking that the water pump was dying (110.000 miles) and overdue on belts, rollers etc. I elected to replace the pump. I also replaced the low temp. T-stat with a normal temp. stat. With everything buttoned up there is less fluctuation in the temp guage now with the needle steady between 8 and 9 depending on ambient temperature where before it would fluctuate fom below the lower hash mark to just below the upper mark. As it turned out the original pump was in good shape but I replaced it anyway for peace of mind. The point being that the front pan and low temp stat were responsible for most of the temperature fluctuation
