Steering Shaft Fastener
#1

Put my steering rack back in yesterday afternoon, and found that the bolt that goes into the end of the steering shaft (where it mates with the rack), won't go through the hole.

I think I remember seeing that the splined part atop the rack had a flat on one side ... is the idea that the side of the shaft with the bolt is supposed to be lined up with the flat, and that's what's needed for the bolt pass through? Or is any orientation of the shaft onto the rack ok and maybe just more (or less) engagement of the splines is needed for clearance for the bolt?

I can imagine that Porsche used the bolt for more than just clamping force on the split end of the shaft; it would make sense that it also somehow locks the two parts together as a fail-safe that they can't come apart.

Thanks!

The bolt should go thru the notch on the shaft. If the slot and the bolt hole do not line up, it is a good indication something is not aligned right. Either the rack or the wheel is not centered. I think the shaft is notched for 2 reasons - extra safety to keep the collar from sliding off and to ensure proper oreintation (although you can still miss by 180 deg.)
