This morning I took my car into the Porsche dealer to have an oil leak looked at (They have a lift, and checking the car out is free ). It turns out that my steering rack has sprung a rather big leak and Porsche wants to charge me 1800 Euro for a new one. Naturally I am not going to pay that, so I have been looking into rebuilt units. However, after a search on this forum I see that the rebuilt units tend to leak as well. Can you please share your good and bad experiences with regards to the rebuilt units?
I would also appreciate some advice on what else to replace and how to minimise the loss of allignment on the front wheels during replacement.
Once again...the RS Barn exhaust + header will have to wait while I plunge into my savings again

I had an Interesting time with my steering rack this month also, athough it turned out to be the main pipe that runs in front of the rack, only confirmed when all the rack and area was washed and dried off, as so much fluid had been spread over time. The racks, (I was informed normally go around the bellows, easy to spot, as they bulge with fluid) most of the leaking comes from the pipe joints, or, as in my case the pipe itself which had perished along the rubber section. It only leaked when the fluid, and car was cold! it 'resealed' once the fluid was warmed!!.
Still cost £280.00 for a new pipe though......
you could try here, in the UK they do 968 rack rebuilds

Sounds familiar. When the mechanic pulled back the below on the passenger side (Your driver side) the fluid came gushing out.

I was hoping to see some more responses to my questions This is uncharted terretory for me and I can really use some guidance. Anyway, I have made some progress and will keep posting my findings.
I have ordered a Power Steering Rack Repair Kit from
http://www.porscheshop.co.uk/acatalog/pors...8_steering.html for 112 Euro. This is much cheaper than a new or rebuilt rack, and lately I have come to trust my own work more than the mechanic's...they never seem to care enough about the details.
I am hoping that with the help of Clark's Garage (
http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/steer-03.htm ) I should be able to do this job myself.
I would greatly appreciate it if anyone could help me out with some Dos and Don’ts. I am especially worried about getting the alignment such that I can drive it the 30 odd kilometers to the Porsche dealer for a new alignment.
