On our steering racks there is a rubber plug (Dust Cap) that becomes brittle with age. When doing the allignment a shop should remove this plug to center the rack. There is a dimple on the bottom of the rack and when this is ligned up with the hole the rack is centered.
Anyway, when I removed my rack recently to have it overhauled this plug broke. I then proceeded to remove all the little pieces left in there thinking the company that will be overhauling the rack will replace it as a service part. I was wrong, they do not supply the part and told me it is supplied by the dealer. So I then looked in PET and there is no part number anywhere. I phoned the dealer and many other place but could not find one anywhere. I didn't want to drive the car without the dustcap so I ended up putting a short flywheel bolt into the threaded hole as a temporary, but maybe permanent, solution.
Last week I was at the Porsche Dealer again to have my allignment done. I asked ask one of the older mechanics if he doesn't know where to get the plug, he promised me he will do some research and get back to me. Today I got a phone call, he found the plug. I was correct, it is not in the PET for the 968, but he found it in the PET for the 993!
So for those of you with this plug missing, or some other "temporary" solution the part number is 477 419 115
You can buy it here

Whoa...down boy!
Let me try to clarify the location of the stinking hole. On my rack with the part number 944 347 011 24 there is a hole right under the Pinion housing. I am adding another picture in hopes to make the position clearer.
