Squeal When Cold

My D1R stage 3 supercharged 1994 cab started squealing when cold about a week and a half ago. It squeals after starting when cold, and continues until the car is warmed up, probably 3 or 4 minutes. It seems to be running normally other than the noise. I adjusted the power steering and the SC/alternator/air conditioner belts with no change. I then just removed the ps belt to ensure it wasn't the ps pump itself, and unfortunately it wasn't. That leaves me with the fear of a failing bearing in the ac compressor, the alternator, or one of the pulleys added with the SC kit. Even worse would be the SC bearings. Any recommendations for locating the problem component among the contenders?

It was off originally. I tried it with it both on and off but it didn't change anything.

Mine does the same thing when cold. I do not have a supercharger. Right now I am suspecting a loose belt but I am not sure. The sound disappears after a couple of minutes. It's an on and off squeal, high pitch.

It's the alternator belt, the alternator has to charge after the car starts to refresh the battery after the large draw from the starting process.

be careful not to tighten that belt too tight.  it will burn out the bearing in the upper idler pulleys of the SC kit.

I know it's been discussed before on this forum but I can't find the thread. How tight is just right and how tight is too much. I know that twisting the belt is one way. How much should I be able to twist it? I thought I remember about 130 degrees. Is that reasonable?

Actually, I think it was about 80 degrees, a little less than one quarter turn. Is that in the ballpark?

Belt twisting is only for the balance belt, for the alternator belt in a non SC car it says in the manuel 10-15 mm deflection in the centre of the belt

I've got good news and bad news. The good news is that I found the reason for the squeal. The rear upper mounting bolt for the ac compressor was missing. I'm not sure if I torqued it as I completed the SC installation - I thought I was pretty diligent about all bolt torquing - but it wasn't there this afternoon. I bought a new bolt, released the tensioner so I could install it, installed the new bolt (with a lock washer this time), and retensioned the belt. I started up the car and the squeal was gone - hooray! Then I went to torque the two upper ac compressor mounting bolts, the new one and the 90mm bolt from the SC kit. I couldn't tighten the 90mm bolt, it just kept spinning. I could see the inner part of the bolt as it protrudes from the back of the compressor ear and it wasn't turning as I turned the head. The bolt has sheared somewhere within it's length. I suspect it's where the shoulder meets the threaded section but haven't pulled it out more than just a little to confirm that it's actually broken. I believe I can get enough clearance to remove the free end of the bolt if I remove the radiator fans but I'm not sure how to remove the broken, threaded portion that will remain in the compressor ear. I really don't want to have to pull the compressor. Creative ideas out there?

belt twisting is also for the SC version of the alternator belt, because you would now want the belt about 85% as tight as on a stock car.

 

no good ideas about getting the broken bolt out of there.  you will be able to remove the long part though, if you remove the intake, the radiator heat shield, and then the radiator hold down brackets and radiator fans.

Flash - Couldn't I just drop the fans out the bottom like before installing the SC? I haven't looked closely at trying this but it didn't look impossible.

if it's the long bolt, you would still need to tip the radiator forward, which requires the above.  the 90mm "might" come out without having to do that.  however, the problem is that the screws that hold the fans in place at the top go through the radiator heat shield, which requires removal of the intake in order to remove it.

 

the other issue is that i don't think you will have access to the compressor ear without slipping the entire SC assembly forward.  that involves also undoing the bracket bolts.

I agree with your concern with accessibility to the compressor ear, particularly if I have to drill out the remaining part of the bolt. I think I'm going to take it to my shop and have them pull the compressor so it can be repaired on the bench. Removing the compressor looks pretty easy once they pull out the refrigerant. Just beyond my abilities once you start dealing with uncharging and recharging the ac system.

I had to helicoil both A/C compressor bolt holes, as the steel bolts had long been seized in the aluminium holes.

It was not a fun job; SC, alt, AND rad moved out of the way, but i didnt have to disconnect the ac compressor. Used a right angle drill and a lot of patience.

Sounds like you are in for a big job, sorry to say.

Oh, and they are different size bolts, natch, so two $50 helicoil kits just for starters. But i fixed them restoring the correct original sizes. Others might no be so picky.
