Silly question about the humble ashtray
#1

My car's ashtray lid is quite loose; it easily slides open when I go around curves. Is this normal behavior? Looking at it, it's not obvious to me how this could be fixed...

Both of mine do that as well. You can remove the black plastic cover part and there are two little tabs that stick out and provide resistance. They wear down over time. I'd think that a couple small strips of rubber or something like that could be the fix but I haven't explored anything yet. New ashtrays are stupid expensive and I don't smoke, so I live with it. Someday, I will fix it though as stuff like this drives me bananas.

Slow down Flash! No don't do that only kidding(sacreligious suggestion if ever there was one). How about a small piece of bluetack between the top fixed plate and the sliding one, positioned just out of sight. not the most technical solution...but since you don't smoke, no probs.

I thought about fitting something between either the top or bottom fixed plate and the sliding door, but the space is awfully tight, so I wasn't sure what type of material might work. What's bluetack? Thanks.

It's been a while but I am almost sure that I was able to disassemble my ashtray and bend some tabs/tracks (?) to stop the vibration.

OK, I'll take a look, as soon as I get my sunroof working. I'm on the last step of Clark's Garage's troubleshooting guide (positioning the microposition switches).

I have no problem with the lid sliding back and forth around corners, but since I store coins in there, "they" let me know when the lateral force is increasing past "their" comfort level!

I rather like the sound of those "boys" sliding around!

Just bend that metal thing that you put your cigarette out with up a bit so it hits the door. It will stay shut.

Great idea! That did the trick. Thanks. Now if only my sunroof problem had as simple of a solution...

Or you can do what I and other have done. Mine was in perfect shape but, as a non-smoker, I found the ashtray useless. Sorry, Jake, I don't like the tingle of coins in corner or my "boys" sliding around - ouch

I removed the lid, trimmed around the top with a glorified Dremmil and lined it with leather. That's where the ol'Blackberry sits now.

PS. I changed the light in the shatray to an orange LED as well for the night illumination.
