Best Head light Bulb? Hella Off-road racking 80/100W?
#1

I've been impressed with the lights on the 968. They are retro-cool. They are also bright. My bulb just burned out. It's not a typical bulb, it's the H4 80/100W off-road racing bulb. A normal bulb is like an H4 55/65W bulb. This a extra bright bulb.

What are other folks using? Did the prior owners need to modify anything to use this bulb?

Just curious. I don't want to use a standard bulb after using this one.

I've never taken mine out, but I have no reason to assume they're not stock, and they're plenty bright for me. The lows were too dim to be safe, so I ended up having them adjusted upward quite a bit - they were positioned *way* down for some reason. Now they are at the stock angle and work great, especially on high beams. I understand what you mean about wanting something brighter, especially in deer country.

At least on the 944's the headlight wiring needs to be upgraded to use the higher wattage bulbs so as not to burn up the wires.

OK - just installed the replacements. The prior light just said, "not for Europe". These are the same bulb but say, "for off road only". They are darn bright. The low beams seem to be about the same as the Xenons in my Audi. The highbeams are really bright. I need to drive around with them more at night and decide if I'm being a menace or not. I don't want to cause grief. I do like to see where I'm going.

Thanks, good to know. The Hella was 7$ a bulb. I went ahead and splurged.

I installed a set of Philips Xtreme bulbs in mine. Auto zone had a sale on them. They are brighter and work well, much whiter too.

Those Philips Extreme bulbs! What was the marketing number on the package? And what are the wattage's for the low and high beams?

I just bought a set of Silver Star's for the wife's element and my guy recommends taking them back - he says they are bright, but they don't last and they run hot so as to discolor the headlight lens.

I am not sure what I am going to do now - the things were $52 bucks for a pair!

they don't last long. i have to buy a set every year on the denali, and i drive at night maybe 12 hours a year. it's a bit annoying since they burn out one at a time. i have to keep spares in the car, it happens so often. were it not for the fact that the OEM lights on that car are so bad, i wouldn't be doing it. i just don't have a better answer yet.

That sucks - She rarely drives at night, but I want her to be able to see better. I guess I will try it.

Thanks. I figured if you would have had a better suggestion you would have thrown it at me.

yeah - sorry - the light is decent, but the lifespan sucks. i haven't had a problem with discoloring lenses YET, but the bulb is a good distance from the lens on this car, and the fixture is very large. on a smaller fixture, or placed closer to the lens, i can see it being a problem. i can also see it being a problem if a lot of use is occurring.

i just budget in extra for bulbs, and find myself in a parking lot changing them from time to time.

Those of you with the silverstar bulbs should try the Osram Silverstar ( European version) not the Sylvania version. The Sylvania do burn out quickly while I've been using the Osram version for over 4 years and still going strong. My 968 is not a daily driver though.

Can corroborate the limited Silverstar bulb lifespan - I bought a set for a previous car, and they BOTH self destructed after almost exactly a year. Never again.

lol - she'll hate them when they burn out. so will you, if only because of the griping she'll do about the new lights you put in her car. been there.

Bob

Years ago (2008) I found a site called danielsternlighting.com . Very informative and I believe I purchased from him at the time. Also bought the Narva H3 range power bulbs.

Very happy with all that I bought and I haven't had to replace them yet.

She rarely does that to me about anything. Well... she just got on me about the old parts volvo sitting in the yard, but I moved it today - It will take her two days to notice...
