shock(ing) gremlis
#1

Hey, how does one edit the title ? Clearly I meant gremlins, not gremlis and Koni, not Knoi

A couple of months ago the adjusting knob of one of the Konis' ( front, driver's side ) suddenly froze in place. No idea at all what could possibly have triggered that but I tried to turn it, in both directions, and even when applying a lot of force with a pair of vise grip pliers it simply did not budge..it's as if it was welded in place. But the ride remained unaffected so I figured there's no rush, it's still set where I had it before so I'll leave it alone for the time being and at some point when I get around to it I'll just order another cartridge and replace it. In the meantime every week I'd try ( in vain ) to see if maybe all the bouncing around from driving hundreds of miles has loosened it. Nothing . Solid as a rock. Even sprayed a bit of WD40 on it, and let it soak in for days , but no chance.

And then half an hour ago as I was checking the oil, the ps and other fluid levels, etc, just for the heck of it I gave it another try with the pliers, and as inexplicably as the time it froze, it started working as if it never had a problem; same feel to the turn resistance in both directions, smooth, no grinding noise, and once again adjustable as it was meant to be.. WTF ?

Dan, one of my front shocks did the same thing, with the "freeze" lasting about 3 months. Tried the WD-40 too, but no joy. Called Koni's tech support, but they had never heard of this. My garage floor isn't level, so I have two wood pads to put under the wheels on the low side whenever I check fluids. While doing this one time I tried adjusting the shock and it was free. Removed the pads and it was frozen again. Maybe something is getting torqued. Any chance your surface isn't level?

we have heard of them binding up and freeing up again, though this is rare

the knobs should turn regardless of height orientation - the only reason i can see for them not doing that is if a bearing on the strut has gone bad and the shaft is no longer parallel to the housing when in a particular position

i suspect there is something not happy in the strut, and it will happen again - hopefully it won't just bind up and seize
