Shell weight?

Hi all,



Maybe this should go in racing but heh...



Went to Croft circuit (UK NE) this weekend to check out the competition in the PCSC class 2 for next year.....basically 3.2 carreras and 944 turbos.



Question.



How does a 968 bare shell weight compare to a 944 and 951 bare shell weight.



There was a guy running a 944 with a SFR supercharged 968 engine in class 1 with close on 400 bhp (remapped by Colin Belton) and at 1040 kilos!!!!!!!!!!!

You Brits are out of control!



You use:

= Miles for distance

= Kilograms for weight

= and something called "Imperial gallons" for volume (1.201 US gallons for those of you playing at home)

What's the big deal?



So, their gallon is equal to five quarts instead of four. No problem.



Their gallon is 20% more petrol but it costs about 300% as much. Now THAT'S a problem. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/blink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I want to see that car someday -- Paul's car has always been a inspiration for me. Now if the AC system would finally crap out on me, I may just have to go the lightweight with SC route...

Its a bit of a monster indeedy



It was stripped bear as well



and yes we are crazy....paying £1 per litre nearly



I don't think we can work out wether we want to go imperial or metric still.



I still sometimes use inches in construction

OK but seriously does anyone know the weight of the bare "white painted" shell ? (kgs or lbs) Also each of the bare body shel panels? I've started building up a spreadsheet of the weights of all the components of a 968. e.g. engine is 172kg (=379lb)



Why would I bother? With this info I can target most cost effective diet ....

(if one already exists please tell me where!)



another e.g. - unsprung weight (four wheels & tyres & brakes & springs & arms etc) weighs about as much the engine again!

as somebody who has spent an insane amount of time looking at where to shave weight off a street car, i can tell you the chassis is heavy, so you're in for an uphill battle



the engine, tube, and tranny, et all are about 750# hood is 39# and the fenders are about 18# each - the doors are about 65#each (fully loaded) and the hatch is close - tires and wheels are 200# and the suspension is about the same - that leaves the windshield and interior, which come to about 250# - about 100# of loose crap, and, if i didn't miss anything, quick math says the chassis then weighs about 1400#

at 1040, he would have had to remove a lot of inner structure sheetmetal - as a unibody car, this would mean the need for additional bracing to make up for that - that's a lot of engineering - love to see it though



duckman - yeah, counted it as a roof - a few pounds more than just the sheet metal for sure - hard to remember that some people have a roof - can't imagine why they would though - hehehe
