RE: Weight Watching 968 Turbo
#1

Just got my car weighed. I still have the rear hatch to replace with Lexan, but I'm really happy with the weight reductions to date.

My car now weighs 2,640 lbs. I think it will come down to 2,600 once we replace the rear hatch.

This should make it pretty competitive with those other cars!

Very cool, it's going to feel like a jet-powered go-kart! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/ohmy.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Good job Jason. Removing weight does wonders for performance. I'm down under 2550 but running out of things to do. I've got the dash and assoc wiring to do and then it's down to FG body panels if want anymore significant reductions.

Are there still any stock parts left on your car?

Are you gonna race it?

Eric,

I can't imagine the work you've put in to get to that weight level!

There are still plenty of stock items left in the car, besides the rear hatch. The windshield is stock, we didn't do the Lexan. The rear quarter panels are all stock, and the bumpers are still stock!

I'm not sure about racing it yet...I've just started instructing and that's a handfull for me right now. It's nice to give back what other's have done for me. I think it may make me a better driver, too.

Anyone have a source for lightweight hood and/or cab trunk lid?

Can we see some pics of your monster? You will prolly shake more like 100+ when replacing that hatch.

Yup checkout http://www.gt-racing.com/ I heard they are not the greatest quality, will require some bodywork.

Hi Jason,

What did you take off to get to such a impressive weigeht reduction?

I have turbo twin cam with 330KW at rear wheels but car is still at 1320kg (2907)LBS.

My plan is to take weight from front of the car as traction is very important for me. I am looking in to carbon fiber hood, fenders, and gutting out doors and installing Lexan windows

It would be nice to see rear hatch in Lexan as well but I think loss of weight would slow me down coming out of the corners on rice track as I do experience that now if I run say 40 litters less of fuel.

Zoran,

That's a really interesting comment about keeping the weight in the rear for traction...I had not thought about that.

My car has the carbon fiber hood and fenders from GT Racing; and we got the sunroof delete roof from Porsche. We gutted the doors rather than replacing them. A few fellows from this group helped me make that decision and I think it was the correct one, too.

We removed the H/V/AC system completely and also the windshield wiper assembly. We also removed the headlights and the power steering system.

The dash has been replaced with a carbon fiber piece from GT Racing and we put in a few extra gauges, like oil temp, coolant temp, and boost.

Most of the carpeting has been removed...I still am working on taking out the last of the glue! Of course I did it backwards; I put in the cage before removing the dash and all the glue and carpeting. So, now I'll have to go back and paint the inside.

I was planning on replacing the rear hatch with Lexan, but maybe I'll give that some more thought.

Jason, I assume this is the car you're bringing to the TracQuest event later this month at Watkins Glen? Looking forward to meeting you and to seeing this creation.

Hey Jim,

Yes, I'll be there...Looking forward to meeting you, too!

Are you staying at the Longhouse Lodge?

Are you planning on going to the evening dinner, too?

Thanks for your replay Jason

Removing H/V/C sounds like a good idea as it is not going to cost any money. Everything else will have to wait as I am still driving this car to all of the track events.

How difficult would be to drive with out power steering on 265/35/18 tires at the front? I like your idea of deleting PS. I will give a test run tomorrow. Negative 3.3 camber should make things a lot easier than I think.

With your rear hatch you will lose approximately 38kg I have been told from people that have done it here in Australia and it maybe a very good thing if you are running standard engine power.

How does it feel being that much lighter at the front? does it under steer at full throttle at high speeds when turning in? I understand that your suspension has been set up to work with that.

Jason, I'm staying at the Seneca Clipper Inn. The previous times I attended TracQuest I stayed at the Longhouse Lodge - but I wasn't especially pleased with the place or the location. The Seneca Clipper claims to have wireless internet, which I will find very helpful. It also looks like it might be a little closer to the track, and...whatever. I am attending the Saturday night banquet.

Zoran,

I have no problem with the loss of power steering...I, too am running 265/35/18 up front, and 295/30/18 in the rear, so I can speak from experience on that. I find that once you're up to speed the manual steering isn't really that noticeable. I believe it does give better feedback. But, in the paddock, that's where you will feel the difference!

By the way, yes it does understeer...We're working on that.

Jim,

I know what you mean about the Longhouse...I usually stay at the Glen Motor Inn; but they're restaurant is closed so I'll try the Longhouse this time.

I hadn't signed up for the dinner initially; maybe I'll switch over.

I'll be instructing for Todd, so if you're in the mood we can go out together.

Jason
