Setting the engine timing
#1

I'm at the important and exciting part of my engine re-assembly. The head is back on, the camshaft belt is fitted. The engine is at Top Dead Centre for cylinder #1 (start of the power stroke)

I'm following the 968 workshop manual (section 15) and have tried applying air pressure to the Variocam unit. My question is for anyone else who has done this ....

I was expecting to see the camshafts move slightly relative to each other, but not so. Before I apply the air pressure the upper chain on the variocam unit is quite taught, while the bottom is a bit loose. All that happens when air is applied is the lower variocam piston moves down and tensions the lower chain, the upper chain and piston don't move at all. This may be quite normal, but I want to be sure.

The other thing I noticed is quite a lot of air leakage around the top of the Variocam body, where the solenoid unit meets it. Again this may be quite normal...

I would like to hear the experience of others on this.

You will see the tensioner move slightly but not much when timing the cams. The leakage where the solenoid meets the body is normal. When you get the timing set to 15thousandths be sure you rotate the engine over at least twice and check it again. The timing has the habit of "changing" when you think its right. Good Luck!
