Dead alternator?
#41

Sure.

I also charged the battery all afternoon (5 hours) and recorded 12.46 VDC at the end. Looks like a marginal battery. I will see what it reads in the morning. The needed on the charger didn't move from its original position either.

I want ahead and got a battery. It is reading 12.57VDC across all spots on the connectors and the lugs. The voltage gauge in the car reads 11.5 or so. Where is the regulator anyway?

in the alternator - they are known to wear out - inexpensive part - 10 minute job (plus some ranting and yelling because you are bent over with a stubby phillips in an awkward positionand probably drop a screw twice)

paragon carries both the generic and the bosch

I just ran it around for about 1/2 hour and started seeing problems. The light on the Voltage gauge light up. I hadn't seen that before. And, the "!" light up with the anti lock brake warning light.

Gauge got down near ten. I got home and checked (with the Digital) and the battery was below 12VDC, 11.86 or so.

Looks like I should just go ahead and get the Alternator and Regulator replaced. No?

Of course I could just get the regulator and see if that works. Any problem with the genaric from Peragon?

no problems i've heard of

since the reg is less than 50 bucks, and the alternator is on the moon, i'd try that first - alternators rarely go bad if the belts are in good shape and tensioned properlya nd the pulleys are straight - there really isn't much to go wrong there other than the bearing

this reminds me that i want to change mine before i go to hershey

My thoughts exactly.

Your driving to Hershey. Well I guess that it would be better in a 968. The 912 Registry has guys that come out from Ohio and Virginia out to the Santa Yenez every year in old 68 and 69 12s!

Well Gentalmen,

I have replaces the regulator on my car and same old same old. No charging! I am stumped! The Alternator is not making any noise but that is the only thing left to replace.

Any other thoughts? This all started with the clutch job, so I am concerned that I got some sort of wires crossed on the starter or something though I can’t see anything.

After I had some clutch work done and the lift dropped and the car started, the alternator wasn't charging. So, under the (bad) assumption that something had gone wrong with the alternator, we swapped alternators - not a fun job - and it still wasn't charging. Turns out there was a very thin wire that had not been reconnected to the starter (the starter had been pulled to do the clutch work). Once that little dangling wire was noticed and reconnected, the alternator started working just fine.

That sounds exactly right! I have looked for something like that because there is a tab for a connector on the starter that looks wanting. I just can't seem to find the wire.

Can you point it out on a diagram or a photo? I know it's a pain but I have been without my car for 6 weeks now.

Well I am throwing in the towel.

I put the volt meter on the battery and pulled the fuses one by one, and nothing happened.

I went under the car again and took off the three connectors to the started and reconnected them making sure the wires were not in anyway near metal, but no dice.

Some old thing, it’s just not charging. I am done, its going to Tommy’s on Monday.

One question I do have is on the starter wiring. Where does the big red cable go?

As I look at the starter, I have the big cable going to the top of the two 13mm nut size solenoid connections. The lower of those two connector has the second largest cable (this one also has the strap that connects to the starter) and of course the smallest of the cables goes to the 10mm nut size connector off to the side. Is that right?

Thanks

Steve

big cable on top nut on mine too - only thing on that looks to be on lower is what looks to be the strap (black shrouded cable - not terribly large)

I went ahead and called Tommy's Verkstad of La Crescenta to see if he could check out the charging problem I am having.

Well, he doesn’t work on 968s or 944s anymore because they are “too much of a pain in the ass”.

At this point after replacing the busted door handles, the timing and balance belts and the clutch and now struggling with this charging problem, I must agree.

What a pain! I would rather pull a complete 911 motor and transaxle out that to do any of the work I have done on this car!

Now I will most probably have to take this car to the dealer to have this charging problem fixed.

There will be a pretty nice white cab up on the block after that.

So long and thanks for all the fish.
