Seat belts flapping in the wind
#1

Hello, I don't know if anyone else has noticed this, or if people have already done this, but in a coupe with the window down, the wind noise rises considerably at around 60 mph. If I pull the seat belt away from the door pillar the noise goes away. So the wind buffeting between the pillar and the section of seat belt between the shoulder mount and where it disappears into the side panel is causing the noise. I was at Walmart and bought two black seat belt pads for $5 a piece and strapped them on this section of belt, and the noise seems to pretty much disappear. Without this extra noise, the car is actually remarkably quite with the windows down and the sunroof open at speed. These things are a really nice fit and they just blend in to the car.

Hmmm... Interesting; thanks for the tip. It's this kind of thing that make this forum such a great resource. I'll have to check on the level of noise coming from this area that my car is making next time I drive it with the sunroof off.

I've noticed that noise as well. I end up closing the windows. But then, with the roof off, you'll get that whooping noise beating your ear drum. Feels like the air is sucking out your brain.

lol - so many hardtops are designed without thought as to what goes on when the windows are down

that's why i wish they had done a real coupe with a trunk and a back window - maybe something like the del sol would have been cool - it had a drop down back window - i've been looking at it, and the rear profiles are very similar - a retrofit body kit could probably be done - the ones i've seen so far though look clumsy

oh well

back on topic - nice easy fix though for the flapping noise - good on ya phil

Haha, or a louder exhaust. That worked on the Triumph for a while, couldn't here the shot bearings at all! I normally wouldn't bother with a noise like this, but the fact is that the air noise with the windows down and the sunroof fully tilted is really not bad compared to the other cars I've driven. At least it's low enough that I can hear and identify the seat belt flapping.

Now the road noise is a different story, I'm definitely going to start that project when I pull off the door panels to move the switches and add the window auto up-down

agreed. Roof tilted is OK at any speed with me. Roof off however creates a suction with the windows up.

Flash-

Not your first time mentioning that Del-Sol merge. Be careful, Those nagging "what if's" Have a way of turning into projects when the opportunity presents itself.

haha, I had the sunroof out for the first time but the deflector was in the wrong position, went to roll the windows up and was sure all of the windows were about the explode. With that deflector in the right position it seems to to a pretty good job of avoiding that resonant frequency, but in the wrong position...

Ahhh. I'll have to check that. My old deflectors pivot pin was broken. Thanks to Pat I have a working one now. Perhaps that was the problem.

Great idea!

I absolutely love to drive my coupe without the roof and those belts beat on the car like it owes them money.

I am on my way to Home Depot right now, and Walmart is just one store over. Another $10 gone.... But honestly, anytime I do something for the 968 and it's $10, I am jumping for joy and touting how inexpensive the car is to maintain. I am so full of cr@p!!

haha, yes, i definitely imagine that was the problem rhudeboye, it makes such a difference moving the deflector around just a bit.

Scott, i agree, nice to have a few cheap and easy projects mixed in, especially as I'm now much more familiar with the bottom side of the car than the top side.
