Seafoam in the engine....anyone tried it?

I've been doing this for years in my various cars, putting it into the crankcase (shortly before an oil change) as well as the gas tank and intake vacuum hose. Has anyone tried seeping seafoam into the intake mani on our cars? If so, any pics or description of where you were able to seep the stuff in? I just bought my 968 a month ago and am not at all familiar with the vacuum hoses in the intake mani.



If all of the vacuum hoses tie into a single cylinder or there is no easy way to get at one, I'm considering disconnecting my airbox and spraying a slow steady stream directly into the throttle body...this trick has worked wonders on my cars before and I have a feeling it may help out my <slightly> rough idle.... (yep, im anal..)

I haven't heard much discussion of it on any of the 968 sites, but there are several folks on a Volvo site that I frequent that swear by it. If your trying to clean out any carbon on the piston head or valves, they say it works miracles.



Sounds like you've used it before, but beware of the impending smoke cloud. I understand that you can smoke out and entire neighborhood block when your running it through the engine.

Ahhh, here’s your "I'm a new 968 owner" post. Well again, welcome aboard. Beautiful low mileage car.



Rough idle- How often do you drive the car? When I first got my 68 it also had a rough idle and a rough ride. However things smoothed out on its own as I drove it more frequently.

Thanks for the welcome <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> And of course I'm aware of the smoke screen!...I'm only doing this to create a cover in front of my local bank while I make a "large withdrawal"...jk jk



I doubt the idle is rough by anyone's standard but my own (ie it's more or less all in my head, I suppose - and it has smoothed out even in the scant 700 or so miles I've put on it since buying) but I just wanted to get some peace of mind since I'm not the original owner of the car and am not *intimately familiar* with the type of life she's been through <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> I've also met many people (both in the VW and Honda communities) that swear by it for cleaning out carbon deposits...so I figured doing it once hopefully couldn't hurt the car in any way and MIGHT show some improvement....



I'm embarassed to say that I've been having so much fun driving the car since I got it, I have barely poked around the engine bay at all yet. And while I've seafoamed my Corrados' engines many times over, I realize this is a slightly more sophisticated engine than the 12v VR6 I'm used to working on which was cake <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/tongue.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> Does anyone know a good vacuum line to use for this seafoaming procedure in our cars? I'm pretty sure anything that's behind the airbox will work....perhaps it's time to search for the intake manifold vacuum hose diagram....

I would suggest just taking the car out and driving it HARD like it was meant to be driven for at least 6 hours or so, you'll be amazed at how nice it runs afterwards!

Italian tune up? I hear that’s what Ferrari mechanics would do, the owners dogged the engine all the time and it fouled the plugs, the mechs would just blown the carbon and all was better <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

is there a diagram of the vacuum lines in our manifold floating around anywhere? Are there any that are even easily accessible? Do they all tie into one cylinder, because then seeping seafoam into there wouldn't do me a whole lot of good....





Kodo, lets see your rado pics!...I love those damn cars, but also hate them equally. Everyone I know who owns (or has owned) both actually said the 968 cost them less on the long run to maintain....go figure.....

Are you seriously going to get rid of your Rados? <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/ohmy.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> I love my 968 but the way my Rado is setup, it will run circles around the 968 on the twisties. Cleanest Rado I have ever owned. Going for the clean look. My first one was a dog of a G60. PO messed with the wiring so badly I was afraid that something was going to cause an electrical fire someday. Love your instrument cluster though. Nice white light. Need to do something to my 968 cluster. Just too dim.

Holy crap, that is one clean rado!! Are you a member over on vwvortex? The corrado forum on there has a ton of info archived on our cars, as does the 12v vr6 engine forum....



Gauges for your Corrado



That company is founded by a member on vortex and long time poster in the Corrado forum...great guy and has a ton of custom parts for our cars. Might be good to check it out for that OEM+ look if you don't want to get too extreme on the Rado.
