I tried the search but have not really come up with anything useful. I went out today to start the car to move it. It started up just fine as usual, but when I let out the clutch to back it up, the engine stumbled a bit like it had no power. Then a puff of blue smoke came out the back and then it started to idle a little rough. After a few anxious moments the idle settled and then all was fine after that. I'm scared that it might be a head gasket. I checked the oil and coolant res and nothing so far. It does smell like it is running a little rich. Have any of you had a similar experience? If it turns out to be a head gasket, have any of you replaced the coolant with OEM Pentosin G11 or G12? It looks like it is the green stuff in there now which I hate for European cars. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/mellow.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> Thank you all in advance.

Actually I do know that blue smoke means it is burning oil despite my question about the head gasket. I just picked up the car a week ago and have not had a chance to do a compression check or leak down test. I will try to find some time to get that done. In the mean time it is going to be parked till I can get to it.

compression test was done on the car a few thousand miles ago...

numbers are good - rings are probably fine - head gasket too



sounds like oil puddling - sometimes it finds its way down to the cylinder past a valve or a valve guide after you shut it off - could also be a blocked pcv (or whatever equivalent they are using on this engine to recirculate crankcase gasses) leaving a puddle in the manifold



a leakdown test will tell for sure on the valves - you could pull the throttle body and look around in the manifold to see if it's wet

How many miles on the engine?

I've seen this happen with a worn oil seal above one or more of the valve guides. The typical pressure tests may be fine, but obviously won't define a worn seal.

I'd suggest checking your plugs. As long as none are fouled, [appear tan], it's probably o-k to drive. Since you mentioned it ran rough, I bet one or more plugs are fouled.

I was thinking about the valve seals. The engine itself has about 132K on it. I haven't had the chance to go through the records yet. Just not enough time in the day to finish work and then do other things. Since it ran rough for about 10 seconds or so then ran fine, I agree with what Flash said, that there is a puddle of oil that leaked in after shutdown. I haven't ran it since so I will try to pull the TB and plugs in a couple weekends since I won't have time this weekend. I plan to get the car in the shop for a complete tune up with new plugs and wires since they have not been changed in the last 6 years. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/ohmy.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />



I want to work on this car but want to have a repair manual before I attempt anything. Is there a good set of manuals out there for sale? I did a little searching and found some stuff. I guess there are the official repair manuals from Porsche, but how can you tell that they are official and not cheap copies on Ebay?

Since you haven't had a chance to go through the records, and les didn't mention it, here is the rest of the ppi results.



1. Dash molding loose at emergency flasher switch(not the end of the world to me)



2. One of the 3rd brake light bulbs is out(968engineering, here I come)



3. Oil lines to oil cooler are leaking.



4. Oil pan gasket is leaking.



5. Right front sway bar bushing is swollen from said oil leak.



6. Both front control A-arms are slightly loose at ball joint.



7. Needs front brake pads and rotors before long, rears at 50%.



8. Rear window wiper doesn't work.



9. Glove box lock missing(PO has an extra one, just needs rekeyed, the glove box works fine, and if I can't lock it, it's not the end of the world).



10. Both door panels are weathered at top.



11. Both sunvisors don't stay up all the way.





All and all, the car is in pretty good shape. I've discussed the history of the car in great detail with Les, so if you have any questions on things, I can help.



I know the car hasn't been driven much in the past 6 months... I wonder if this could be related

#8 has been fixed with new glass.



3,4,5,6 I did not know about. I did here some clunking in the front so I had a feeling.



He told me about the brakes. I have parts on order as well parts he supplied me.



1,9,10,11 are things that I have pointed out. Not a big issue at the moment.

Don't forget to check those stupid basics like moisture in plug wells causing arching and misifiring which could cause smoke.

At 132k, carbon on valve shafts could be letting oil get by seals.

A Run Rite induction cleaning and oil treatment could cure some or all of these issues
