Road Trip 2013
#1

It's that time again. This will be the 4th year in a row that my kid has wanted to get in a Porsche and go for a road trip with his old man. So - off we go. This has been a silly busy summer so we have chopped the trip down a bit. I think we are covering 2000 miles in 5 days this year when we usually do 3000+ in 7 or 8.

Interestingly the trips seem a bit mundane now as we have worked out all the little bugs with the car (drink holders, stereo, navigation, etc etc). The car is in the best shape its ever been (even with double the miles from 4 years ago) and we look to have some fun, fast roads on the agenda this year.

Anyway, I'll post some pics along the way and hope that you can enjoy the ride with us.

BTW is anyone going to Laguna Seca for the moto this weekend?

Radar mounted high and dry Rap.

Day 1 Highlights

Redneck racecar 3.0.

Changes of note from 2.0

- no paint protection. I've learned the stupid way that a clear bra is really the only thing that works. My vinyl bra scuffed the paint, the temporary clear bra stretched the paint (yes, stretched it), and the roll on Elmers glue attached itself to the windshield surround and simply won't come off. I'll just get rock chips and respray like everyone else.

- DR1SC Stage 3

- Short shift kit

- heat shield

- 2 bottle cages on the roll bar

- upgraded Aux input to allow iphone 4, iphone 5, and android

Looks pretty sure, but they eat their neighbors up here...

Looking a bit tattered. Hoping for a good start this AM we really don't want to have to call Triple A

Now that we are back and the car is in the safety of my garage a couple of stats and thoughts to wrap this up for 2013.

Total days on road: 5

Total hours on the road: 48

Total hours in the seat: 40

Total Miles: 1700

Total Gallons: 91

Mileage: 18.6 Average; 17.2 worst tank, 23 best tank

Problems with car: 2 start failures with a clunk. Started the next 4 times.

Problems with DR1SC - my tires are pretty worn out...

Thoughts:

The D1RSC performed flawlessly.

- We brought the liquid gold just in case, and we checked the oil level a couple of times. It was fine.

- We drove through long stretches (over 200 miles) of 100+F temps, and drove hard through canyons - repeated 3 to 2 downshifts with hard acceleration out of the turns. You see just two of hundreds of similar digs in the video above. Engine temp stayed below the 10-o Clock position. When it did climb up I backed off for a few hundred yards and it came down nicely. No overheating at all.

- We did a couple of highway blasts as well with no overheating.

Overall, the unit performed as though it came with the car from day-1. I saw the other post about the Boxster S. I drove the 987 S and thought it had more get up and go than my tired '93 stock 968 cab. I still liked the 968 better for other reasons, but the performance difference was clear. With the SC stage 3 this a 20-year old 4-banger performs better than the Boxter S that I drove. At least as fast and more responsive above 3K. Superb job flash.

On the topic of road trips - this has been the highlight of my year for the past 4. We have no real agenda. I do book hotels so that I can get a decent rate in advance and know where we are going to sleep. From there we just look for squiggly lines on the map and have fun. We always see something that we could have never anticipated. This year it was 3 guys jumping off a cliff. Icarus lives. Oh - and the largest tree on the planet - check that one off the list.

If you can do this gents, and ladies, do it. The car will thank you, your SO will thank you, and your right-seater will thank you. But mostly, you'll give yourself a memory for the day when the feet are too slow and the eyes are no longer clear.

Thanks for taking us along for the ride! It is always great to see pictures of a 968 in interesting places.

As you mentioned, trips such as my recent trip down to Paso Robles, will be serve as "a memory for the day when the feet are too slow and the eyes are no longer clear".

This is fantastic, and I will totally do this with my kids when they are older. I still have 6 years before the eldest it driving age, so maybe gas will come down by then (YEAH, RIGHT!)

Thanks for sharing, this is inspiring!

Yeah, and that mind altering substance is called an iPad, lol...half of the stuff I try to do on this POS device does not work out tne way I want .. not to mention that I don't have the patience to wait and verify if tne command I perform actually takes hold. My fault of course, but I refuse to take responsibility for any such glitches ..need to blame it on something else :-) :-)
